From operations agencies to website designers to therapists, I’ve written for all kinds of small businesses. And after 5 years of doing this, I’m still refining my process — but it’s definitely come a long way from when I first started. Here’s what I’m doing now ⬇️ 📝 A Beefy Brand Intake Form & Onboarding Call 🔎 Market, Consumer, Competitor, and SEO Keyword Research — the first and most important step to any website copywriting project 👀 Analyze Research + Plan Website Copy 🪩 Brand Voice & Messaging Development — This is like my North Star when writing the copy, so it sounds consistent across every web page and aligns with their branding. Most of my clients don’t have a brand voice guide, so I develop it for them! 👩🏾‍💻 Website Copywriting — This can take 10-25 hours, or more. How fast I can get it all done depends on the scope of the work, the complexity of my client’s work, and how satisfied they are with the first round. SIDEBAR 👉🏾 I’m currently making a guided website copywriting template, and can’t wait to launch it to y’all 😆 🗣️👂🏾 Feedback & Revisions — I record a Loom video walking through the entire website copy document. 5 words to avoid in website copy AND what to use ~*instead*~ 01: “Submit” Why? ➡️ Vague actions as CTA button copy (like “submit” & “click here”) is a major conversion killer. What to do instead ➡️ Get creative with your button copy! Give your reader a clear action to take. Think: What’s the benefit of clicking that button? 02: “Very” Why? ➡️ Adverbs like “very,” “actually,” and “really” are almost always unnecessary and just slows your reader down. What to do instead ➡️ Cut these words altogether to make for an easier read for your audience. 03: “Authentic” Why? ➡️ This word is hella overused and, as a result, holds very little meaning. What to do instead ➡️ Think about how you want your reader to FEEL. Focus on that ~*feeling*~ to get your point across. 04: Too many keywords Why? ➡️ This is keyword stuffing, and Google will punish you for it. What to do instead ➡️ Use SEO keywords naturally throughout your website copy, just as you would in a regular conversation. 05: “Paris Hilton” Why? ➡️ Google blacklists ~10k websites every day that they consider suspicious.
