Despite becoming one of the biggest comedy stars in the world, Jim Carrey was actually rejected by Saturday Night Live twice. He first auditioned for the 1980–81 season, and legend has it that while he was auditioning, he saw someone else through the window of a building across the street who seemed to be “losing it,” which influenced his high-energy, physical comedy style later on.
When he finally returned to host the show years later, his “Night at the Roxbury” sketch with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan became so iconic that it was eventually turned into a full-length feature film. During his hosting gigs, Carrey was known for being so physically intense that he would often bruise himself or accidentally break props during rehearsals because he refused to “half-speed” any of his slapstick routines.
