The Miraculous Staircase That Shouldn’t Exist . . . In a small chapel in Santa Fe lies one of America’s strangest architectural mysteries. After their architect died in 1878, the Sisters of Loretto were left with no way to reach the choir loft. With no solution, they prayed for nine days to Saint Joseph. Then, a mysterious carpenter appeared, built a breathtaking spiral staircase with no visible support, and vanished without a trace. To this day, no one can fully explain how it stands… or who built it. . . . #MiracleStaircase #LorettoChapel #UnexplainedMysteries #ArchitecturalMystery #SacredHistory

When Did You Last See Your Father? (1878) By William Frederick Yeames 📍 Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom The scene is quiet — but it carries unbearable weight. A young boy stands alone before a group of men who are not seeking truth, but a confession. The question in the title is not innocent; it is a trap. Any answer he gives could send his father to death. Set during the English Civil War, the painting shows a child forced to confront political violence far beyond his age. His rigid posture and restrained expression reveal something deeper than fear — the realization that honesty can be dangerous. The men around him embody authority and judgment; he embodies innocence cornered by power. The true drama lies in what remains unsaid. This is the exact moment childhood fractures, when silence becomes a form of protection and truth becomes a risk. 👉 Follow @explainingpaintings to uncover the hidden tension behind historical masterpieces.

Did he not see Melania or…? Happy Easter Monday to all who celebrate! Today, the White House is continuing a tradition that officially dates back to 1878, when Rutherford B. Hayes was President of the United States. It’s the annual Easter Egg Roll. The White House Easter Egg Roll is an event where families - especially kids - gather on the South Lawn for activities like egg-rolling races, games, and music, with free tickets distributed by lottery and children often receiving a commemorative wooden egg to take home. Here are some highlights from today’s celebration, which was….really something.

🎶🦢 Camille Saint-Saëns – Le Cygne (The Swan), from The Carnival of the Animals Gautier Capuçon – cello 🎻 | hr-Sinfonieorchester | Alain Altinoglu • In 1878, Saint-Saëns lost both of his sons within weeks. One fell from a window. The other died of illness shortly after. Three years later, he left his wife and never saw her again. When he retreated to an Austrian village in 1886, it wasn't a holiday — it was an escape. And there, in just a few days, he composed an entire suite about animals. A joke. Fourteen pieces where tortoises waltz in slow motion and donkeys disguised as music critics bray out of tune. But buried in the middle of all that, he wrote The Swan. And in that piece, there was no joke at all. • The Greek myth held that the mute swan is silent its entire life — until the moment of death, when it sings the most beautiful of songs. Saint-Saëns turned that into structure: the piano is the water, rippling endlessly in semiquavers, and the cello is the swan, gliding over the surface in a melody that never breaks the flow. It's not metaphor — it's architecture. The swan moves because the water holds it up. Remove the arpeggios and the melody collapses. And it's that balance that makes the piece as difficult to play as it sounds easy to hear. • Capuçon plays with the endpin extended longer than usual — the cello sits nearly horizontal, letting the weight of his arm fall naturally onto the string. The result is a legato where each note seems to dissolve into the next, seamless. The 1701 Goffriller does the rest: a dark, dense sound that fills the entire hall without forcing. Here, the swan is not delicate. It is solemn. The kind of beauty that only exists because it carries weight. Saint-Saëns hid the entire Carnival for fear of not being taken seriously. But he couldn't hide what mattered. The Swan escaped. And it's the only thing the whole world remembers. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music, daily in your feed. • • • #cello #violin #classicalmusic

Happy national day to all Bulgarians! 🇧🇬 On 3 March, Bulgaria celebrates its national day, commemorating the country’s liberation in 1878. This day marks a defining moment in Bulgarian history and honours the nation’s enduring pursuit of freedom, sovereignty and national identity. Did you know? The Bulgarian flag features three horizontal stripes – ⚪ white on the top, 🟢 green in the middle and 🔴 red at the bottom. White symbolises peace, freedom and hope; green represents Bulgaria’s rich nature and agricultural heritage; and red stands for courage, strength and the sacrifices made for independence.

Catching a predator that should not be in the UK 🇬🇧 Zander or ‘Pikeperch’ were first introduced to the UK in 1878 on the Woburn Estate. In 1963 they were released on a wider scale in to the Great Ouse Relief Channel and since have spread rapidly. They’re a fantastic predator of murky waters and thrive in the canals of the UK 🇬🇧 I set about to find one and document it and realised very quickly that snorkelling wasn’t going to work so catching one was the only hope and here’s the result of that! After 5 attempts, it finally happened. A top predator, a fantastic looking thing but ultimately, it shouldn’t be here! 🎣 #wildlife #animalanomalies #ukwildlife #fish

Peygamber Efendimiz’in (s.a.v.) kabrini savunmayı en büyük şeref kabul etti. 🤲🕌 #çölkaplanı #fahrettinpaşa #medinemüdafaası #osmanlıtarihi #tari̇h #i̇slamtarihi

I Fanlalai’an, led by Master of CHamoru chant Leonard Iriarte, chant as part of a ceremony yesterday welcoming home to Guam, the bones of 4 Ancient CHamorus taken in 1878 and returned by the American Museum of Natural History in New York just this month. This repatriation was initiated and guided by Fran Lujan the Director/Curator for the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum in Long Beach. The to’lang were brought home by Guam SHPO Patrick Lujan. The ceremony was organized by the Guam Cultural Repository Collection Management team and the staff of the Guam Museum. Several hundred people attended the ceremony at the Guam Museum to learn the history of how the bones were taken and also how they were returned. They then had a chance to visit and see them, and leave offerings celebrating their journey home, before they are taken into the collection. #guammuseum #chamorro #chamoru #theguambus
