RIThis is A23a, currently the largest iceberg on the planet, and after 30 years of being grounded in the Weddell Sea is now drifting north towards South Georgia. This massive tabular berg is 40 nautical miles long, up to 400 metres thick, covers 4000km2 and weighs just short of one trillion tonnes! Simply enormous. The iceberg is showing dramatic signs of erosion as it moves into warmer waters, combined with wave action from the large Southern Ocean swells.

ANThis is A-23A — one of the biggest icebergs on Earth. In 1986, a massive 9,000 km² block of ice broke away from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica, creating this frozen giant that was larger than some countries. Nearly 400 meters thick, it remained stuck to the seafloor for more than 30 years before finally drifting back into the open ocean. Today it still carries enough ancient ice to supply the entire planet with water for a year. A drifting mountain of ice, older than most of us, silently moving through the Southern Ocean.
