Most videographers immediately reach for expensive stabilization gear when they could be maximizing what’s already built into their camera.
This is my go-to checklist I make sure to hit on every time I shoot handheld!
• Camera Settings: Turn on Active Stabilization mode if you’re using a Sony camera (MENU > Camera > Image Stabilization > SteadyShot)
• Lens Selection: Native Sony lenses communicate better with the IBIS system than third-party options. Sony glass gives noticeably smoother results.
• Body Positioning: Keep your elbows tucked tight against your body, creating a human tripod. The camera should feel like an extension of your torso.
• Footwork: Practice the “ninja walk” - rolling from heel to toe while keeping your knees slightly bent to minimize vertical movement.
I’ve used this exact technique on paid client shoots ranging from weddings to corporate work, and clients are consistently amazed at how stable the footage looks without any post-stabilization.
The best part? I can set up and start shooting in seconds rather than spending 10+ minutes balancing a gimbal.

Here are a few moves you can try next time you’re out filming:
• Low Angle Push In (Pan Follow Mode): Great hero shots and adding presence to your subject.
• 3D Roll 360 (FPV Mode): My go-to when I want a creative spin or transition shot.
• Trucking Shot (Pan Follow Mode): Simple left-to-right movement that keeps motion smooth and cinematic.
• Low Orbit (Pan Follow Tilt Mode): Perfect for adding movement and depth around cars or products.
• Pull Back (Pan Follow Mode): A classic reveal move that builds anticipation.

These are the settings I recommend to get the highest quality from this awesome action camera.
✅ Set resolution to 4K (Active HDR is unavailable in 8K)
✅ Use 30FPS (Instagram recommends a minimum of 30FPS for reels)
✅ Aspect ratio: 16:9
✅ Stabilization: Set to high for the smoothest footage possible
✅ Active HDR: On
✅ Field of view: Dewarp (This prevents the edges of the image from getting distorted)
✅ Color Profile: Standard
✅ Exposure Compensation (EV): -0.5 (Slightly underexposing helps prevent blown-out highlights)
✅ Metering Mode: Face Priority
✅ Low Light Stabilization: On
✅ Sharpness: Medium (The default image looks a little too sharp)
✅ Grid Lines: Turn on “Grid” to help frame your shots
✅ Bitrate: High
📷 Photo Settings:
✅ Format: Pureshot + RAW
✅ Ratio: 4:3
✅ Resolution: 48MP
