ERThe Millennium Problems are a collection of seven of the most difficult and significant unsolved questions in mathematics. In 2000, they were introduced by the Clay Mathematics Institute, which offered a prize of one million dollars for the solution of each of these problems. These problems were chosen because their solution could have profound implications for mathematics and related fields of science.
The problems cover various areas of mathematics, including number theory, analysis, topology, and algebra. Some of the most famous Millennium Problems are the Riemann Hypothesis, which has occupied mathematicians for over a century, and the P vs NP question, which has had fundamental implications for computer science. Another example is the Navier-Stokes equation, which describes the behavior of fluids and whose solution could revolutionize physics and engineering.
To date, only one of the seven problems has been solved: the Poincaré conjecture, which was proved by Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman in 2003. However, Perelman declined both the prize money and the associated award. The remaining six problems remain a challenge for mathematicians worldwide, and their solution could open new avenues in science and expand our understanding of mathematical foundations.

MIthe p vs np problem is one of the biggest unsolved questions in computer science! 🥲
🦩 a ✨simplified✨overview:
p problems: can be solved quickly, meaning there’s an algorithm that can find the solution in polynomial time (e.g., O(n^2), O(n^3)). a classic example is sorting a list with merge sort, which runs in O(n log n) time.
np problems: solutions can be verified quickly in polynomial time, but we don’t know if they can be solved quickly too. for example, the traveling salesman problem (finding the shortest route that visits each city exactly once and returns to the starting point) is easy to verify but hard to solve.
🦩 wait, but what does polynomial time mean?
it refers to an algorithm whose running time is a polynomial function of the size of the input, like O(n^2) or O(n^3). this is considered efficient because the time grows at a manageable rate as the input size increases.
🦩 the big question:
if every problem whose solution can be quickly verified (np) can also be quickly solved (p)? if p = np, it means all these problems can be solved as efficiently as they can be checked. if p ≠ np, it means some problems are inherently more complex to solve than to verify.
