IS THIS HOW MUCH YOUR ATHLETE REALLY NEEDS TO EAT? 🍞⚡️ Your teen’s brain alone needs ~130 g of carbs a day just to focus, concentrate, manage emotions and make good decisions, let alone reaction time, judgement and skill acquisition in their sport. But that’s only the start. 
Even on a rest day, their body is still working hard, running all its background apps 📲 like recovery, immune function, hormone production and growth, and all of that needs fuel too. That’s where the 3–5 g of carbohydrate per kilo of body weight per day comes in.
For a 70 kg surf-lifesaving athelte like my son Henry, that’s 210–350 g/day (about 14–23 slices of bread). And then we add training 👇 
⚽️ Moderate training (1 hr/day, 5–7 g/kg/day) That jumps to 350–490 g/day
≈ 23–33 slices of bread. 🏊‍♂️ Moderate-to-high intensity (1–3 hrs/day, 6–10 g/kg/day)
Now we’re talking 420–700 g/day
≈ 28–47 slices of bread. 🚴‍♀️ Extreme duration (4–5 hrs/day, 8–12 g/kg/day)
That’s 560–840 g/day
≈ 37–56 slices of bread. And this is exactly why so many young athletes end up underfuelling, because no one’s ever shown them, or their parents, what their bodies truly need. 
Of course, this isn’t all about bread. The goal is a balance of nutritious carbohydrates across the day. Things like wholegrain bread, breakfast cereals, wholegrains, pasta, wholegrain crackers, potatoes, sweet potato, corn, beans, peas, lentils, milk, yoghurt and fruit, plus strategic performance carbs around training. 👉 If you’re a sports parent, fuelling is about making sure your athlete has the carbs they need to train hard, recover well, and actually benefit from all that effort. This is more about young players being able to understand/ feel the 3 positions of a shot, than just shooting up against a wall without a ball! So they know what to fix eventually on a miss. To some this is pointless, but if you look deep into it, we are focusing on a proper base, posture, how to pop upward into a shot on balance, shot line, sequence, and each shot position ‼️Details most shooters lack! Our at home shooting programs goal is to: 1. Teach parents how to teach their kids at home 2. Teach the player to understand key details of a shot before building bad habits in the fog 3. Build a solid foundation 4. Use our program as a continuous resource @zaymason22 started with these drills when he was 5 years old. We come back to this often as he continues to grow.
