ROOctober is AAC awareness month, and here is your reminder that AACs are just as important as any other disability aid, and its not as simple as telling someone “just speak”.
The videos of the AAC are from my bestie @minnie_and_marisa who uses an AAC as her primary form of communication. (She is also the one with me in the second to last video)
AAC stands for Augmentative Alternative Communication. AAC devices usually look like a tablet or IPad with a large speaker on the back. Most of these devices can only be used to use the AAC app and accessing a search engine. This is the type of AAC used in this video, another type is a device that uses eye tracking to use the words rather than pressing a button, this for people that may not have much function in their limbs.

TWWatching Tommy thrive with his AAC device has been nothing short of amazing. ALOdin is an adult that is mostly non speaking & lives with autism & cerebral palsy.
People often ask how we communicate & understand what Odin wants & needs.
We explain that non speaking doesn’t mean he can’t speak, it’s just that verbal speech is not his main form of communication.♥️
Odin can speak verbally, with simple sign language, PECS, & uses an AAC Device, (like in this video)
The program he’s using in this video is called CHATTERBOARDS. It allows us to use text to speech & our own pictures to help him ask for daily things like this coffee.
