Tom Holland accidentally bumped into Dafoe while cloaked and this was how the two first met on-set. Tom Holland helped to save this movie from cancellation by forcing renegotiations between Sony and Disney. Under the terms of the new deal, not only does Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) still take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but Spider-Man can also appear in future MCU movies, as well as Sony’s own Spider-Man franchise. Earlier drafts of the film were very different from the finished product. The script focused on Peter’s galactic adventures with a character based in space (probably Skrulls or Captain Marvel, as hinted in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)). However, that story-line was dropped in favor of setting up Secret Invasion (2023), and a completely new script was written after the new deal between Sony and Disney in 2019, focusing on the multiverse instead. One month after the premiere, Andrew Garfield gave an interview to Entertainment Tonight, where for the first time he openly talks about being a part of this movie. He revealed he was desperate to see people react to his and Tobey Maguire’s return for their Spider-Man roles. He and Maguire went to watch the movie on opening night, unbeknown to everyone. Garfield described the audience’s reactions as “unrealistic” and “absolutely fantastic”. He also expressed interest in returning for his part as Peter Parker. According to screenwriter Chris McKenna, both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were on board before they had read any of the scripts. McKenna stated, “They knew the idea, they trusted everyone.” The film became Sony’s highest-grossing film in history. Earned $1.6 billion in its first 11 days at the box office.
