Here’s the thing — they’re not being manipulative. They’re being impulsive. Like, full-send, nervous-system-in-panic-mode impulsive. When an ADHD kid lies, it’s often not premeditated. It’s their brain’s instant reaction to fear, shame, or getting in trouble — before logic or honesty ever has a chance to show up. And the wild part? They might actually believe their story at first. Because until they can calm down and regulate, their brain is running a “protect at all costs” program. So yeah… it’s frustrating. But it’s not defiance. It’s dysregulation. 👉 If you’ve ever sat there wondering “Why would they lie about something so small?” — you’re not alone. And you’re not a bad parent. Chapter 6 of my ADHD Parenting eBook breaks down impulsivity, lying, emotional reactions, and how to respond without making things worse 💛 DM BOOK and I’ll send the link your way! #ADHDparenting #NeurodivergentKids #ADHDmom #ParentingADHD #ADHDtruths #ADHDkids #MomTok #ADHDlife #ImpulseControlWho #ADHDexplained #ADHDsupport #ADHDreality

Discipline isn’t a magic cure for a brain that’s wired differently. If it was, ADHD parenting would be easy. But here’s the thing most people don’t get: When your child’s nervous system is running on fumes, no amount of time-outs, consequences, or lectures will calm the storm. You can’t reason with a brain that’s dysregulated. You can’t teach self-control when their blood sugar is crashing. And you definitely can’t “fix” ADHD with more rules. What actually works? Fueling the brain so it can handle the demands we’re putting on it. Because when they have the right nutrients and steady energy… They can think before they react. They can follow through. They can actually use the coping skills we’re trying to teach them. So no, it’s not about being softer or stricter. It’s about being smarter with how we support their brain. Comment SNACKS and I’ll DM you my ADHD Snack Solution—filled with kid-approved swaps that stabilize blood sugar and make life calmer. You must be following @goodfood.goodkids to get the link. This reframe changed the way I think about ADHD parenting. ⬇️ When we treat ADHD as something wrong with our child that needs correcting, we keep looking for solutions in the wrong place. The research actually tells a different story. A 2022 study in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry (Cheesman et al.) found that school environment significantly moderated educational outcomes for kids with ADHD. The same child — dramatically different results — depending on the setting. Signs of an environment mismatch: • Described as capable but consistently underperforming • Fine at home, ‘a different child’ at school • Results change dramatically with different teachers • Accommodations help, but the baseline struggle stays high Your child’s brain isn’t broken. It’s looking for the right environment. Your job isn’t to fix them — it’s to advocate for them. 💙 Follow me @drlindsayemmerson for psychology-backed parenting support for ages 0-18. ✨ If you have an ADHD child and are homeschool-curious, comment “Homeschool” and I’ll share a resource that helped me. #ADHDparenting #neurodivergent #ADHDkids #schoolstruggles #ADHDsupport

This is what ADHD parenting actually feels like. One parent wants to let it slide. The other is ready to bring down corporate consequences. Meanwhile, your child with ADHD is getting mixed messages because consistency is HARD when you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, and trying to do the “right” thing. Getting on the same page isn’t about being perfect. It’s about working together to create consequences that fit your family and your values, so you can be consistent. Consistency helps children with ADHD learn skills more quickly and reduces challenging behaviors over time. 🤔Confused about consequences and what actually works for kids with ADHD? ✨Comment 183 to listen to our Shining with ADHD episode: “A Parent’s Guide to Effective Consequences for Kids with ADHD.” #adhdparenting #adhdparent #adhdkids #parentingadhd #adhdmom

When your ADHD child is bouncing off the walls - and you’re already maxed out, touched out, and overstimulated… this is one of the hardest moments in ADHD parenting. What’s happening isn’t bad behaviour. It’s two dysregulated nervous systems colliding. Your child’s ADHD brain is seeking stimulation, movement, and connection to feel regulated. Your nervous system is craving quiet, space, and relief. And here’s the part no one tells moms: you can’t regulate your child when you’re already overwhelmed. That doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human. In these moments, the goal isn’t perfect calm. It’s slowing the moment down - fewer words, less input, more pause. Sometimes that looks like stepping away for 30 seconds. Sometimes it’s changing the environment instead of correcting the behaviour. Sometimes it’s just breathing and saying, “I need a moment.” Regulation starts with you - but you’re allowed support too. Inside Taming Big Emotions, I teach moms what actually helps in these exact moments - when both of you are overwhelmed and everything feels like it’s about to explode. Link in bio.

If you’re raising kids with ADHD, you might know this cycle well. Swim team. Tumbling. Tennis. Roller skating. Rock climbing. Parkour. Horseback riding. Water polo. Some kids with ADHD absolutely thrive in organized sports. Movement is amazing for focus, confidence, and emotional regulation. But for some ADHD kids organized sports can be complicated. It can be hard to find something your unique kid really enjoy plus a setting that’s supportive. Dragging my kids to something they didn’t actually want to do once or twice a week was a disaster. The resistance, the dread, the meltdowns… it just wasn’t worth it. It wasn’t until my oldest reached middle school that he finally found a sport he truly committed to. He’s sense moved on but he did play soccer in a rec league for 3 years and he went to the practices and the games willingly. Until then, we did a lot of trying things for a few months and moving on. And you know what? That was still valuable. They explored new environments, new skills, and new ways to move their bodies. Nothing was wasted. One thing that helped us a lot was asking if they could come try something once before committing. That simple change made a huge difference for our ADHD family. If your kids are ping-ponging from activity to activity, you are not alone. 💬 Tell me in the comments: How many sports or activities has your child tried so far? I’ll go first… I’ve honestly lost count. And what thing have they loved?! For us, the setting, coach and times also have a huge impact on whether or not something is a good fit. And if you’re navigating ADHD motherhood, ADHD parenting, and raising kids with ADHD, follow along for more real life support. . . . . . #adhdmom #neurodivergentmom #adhdparenting #adhdchild #neurodivergentfamily

Your ADHD child is not lazy. But if you don’t understand ADHD, it can look exactly like that. And I’ll be the first to admit… I used to think this too. So let’s talk about 3 behaviours that look like defiance but are actually ADHD. 1️⃣ “They won’t start the task.” Parents think: lazy. Reality: task initiation difficulty. ADHD brains struggle to activate tasks. Your child may want to start…but their brain cannot get the engine going. 2️⃣ They say NO to everything Parents think: defiance. Reality: processing delay. ADHD brains often need extra time to process a question. So when you ask something quickly, the brain reacts with: “no” “I don’t care” “leave me alone” Try this instead: pause → give their brain time → ask again. 3️⃣ They forget directions immediately Parents think: not listening. Reality: working memory struggles. You said it. They heard it. But their brain couldn’t hold onto the information long enough to act on it. And honestly? I could name 100 daily situations where parents think they’re seeing bad behaviour…when what they’re really seeing is ADHD. So you have a choice. You can keep getting frustrated…or you can learn what ADHD actually is and how to support it. Because living with an ADHD child does not mean you automatically understand ADHD. That’s exactly why I created Bootcamp. Inside Bootcamp parents get: ✔ 90-minute weekly coaching calls ✔ daily support ✔ the ADHD parenting manual ✔ a guide to teaching executive function skills ✔ 45+ parenting tools and resources Because ADHD parenting shouldn’t feel like chaos. Doors are open now. So ask yourself: Are you choosing chaos + hope things change or hope + action Comment BOOTCAMP and I’ll send you the details. #adhdparenting #adhdsupport #adhdmoms #executivefunction #adhdkids #neurodivergentparenting 👉 Which of these behaviours do you see most in your child — 1, 2, or 3?

Things I Wish People Knew About ADHD Parenting Parenting a child with ADHD is a beautiful, exhausting, and eye-opening journey. It’s more than just “high energy” or “not listening” it’s navigating a world that wasn’t built for the way their brain works. Here are a few things I wish more people understood: It’s not bad parenting ADHD brains are wired differently, and traditional discipline doesn’t always work. We have to get creative. Emotional regulation is HARD. Big feelings come fast and strong, and helping our kids work through them takes patience (and sometimes deep breaths for us too). Focus isn’t a choice. ADHD isn’t about being lazy or unmotivated. If they could focus, they would. Sometimes they hyperfocus, sometimes they can’t focus at all. Small wins are HUGE. Getting out the door without a meltdown, finishing a homework page, or remembering to hang up a backpack? Those are victories worth celebrating! They are NOT broken. The world may see ADHD as a challenge, but I see creativity, resilience, and endless potential. If you’re an ADHD parent, I see you. You’re doing an amazing job.
