I had to refer to multiple sources of information, and since fashion is always evolving, sometimes it gets difficult to catch up with the ever-changing fashion scene. About the textile/craft: Madras Checks with embellished Kantha stitch.
Madras checks with its vibrant colours, and distinct plaid patterns carry a rich history.
Around the 12th century, Madras Checks was a piece of handloom clothing worn by the peasant community of Madraspatnam (Madras now Chennai). The local weavers would extract the soft fibres from the “tip-skin” of native trees to weave 36″ wide square handkerchiefs, which were then block printed with bright coloured check patterns. They were originally worn as lungis (garments wrapped around the waist, reaching to the ankles).
Over the years, this vibrant fabric has inspired a host of garments- sarees, blouses, and dresses of various silhouettes.
