To better understand the pressures on Canada’s food system — and the innovations that could improve food security for Canadians — the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry conducted a fact‑finding mission in Toronto and Southwestern Ontario. Senators met with producers, distributors, researchers, food‑rescue organizations and innovators working at every point in the supply chain. The insights they gained from these experts will help shape their study on how federal policies and programs can be strengthened to support a secure and sustainable food supply. 🎥 Watch the video for highlights from the fact-finding mission. ___ Pour mieux comprendre les pressions qui s’exercent sur le système alimentaire du Canada — ainsi que les innovations qui pourraient améliorer la sécurité alimentaire pour la population — le Comité sénatorial de l’agriculture et des forêts a mené une mission d’étude à Toronto et dans le Sud‑Ouest de l’Ontario. J’ai eu l’occasion de participer à un panel avec les producteurs de fruits et légumes du Canada afin de discuter du travail du Comité permanent de l’agriculture et de l’agroalimentaire et du rapport visant à libérer le potentiel du secteur agricole et agroalimentaire canadien grâce à une réforme réglementaire. Ces échanges sont essentiels pour que les réalités des producteurs guident les décisions que nous prenons à Ottawa et pour continuer à bâtir un secteur agricole fort et durable pour les années à venir. - Behind every fruit and vegetable grown in Canada are dedicated producers working the land with patience and determination to feed our communities. I had the opportunity to participate in a panel with the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada to discuss the work of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food and the report on unleashing the potential of Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector through regulatory reform. These discussions help ensure producers’ realities guide the decisions we make in Ottawa and help build a strong and sustainable future for Canadian agriculture.

Earlier today, our First National Executive Vice-President, Patrick St-Georges, provided this testimony before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food. The committee is presently studying the impacts of the announced closure of 8 agricultural research stations and sub-stations across the country - cuts that we wholeheartedly oppose. In particular, Patrick's testimony touched on the closure of the Quebec Research and Development Centre. The Quebec RDC conducts unique research on agriculture in cold and humid climates, and its closure could have serious impacts on Canadian agriculture's productivity, sustainability and environmental performance. Patrick was also joined on a committee panel by Sébastien Paquette of @afpc_qc, Lacombe AB mayor @thaliahibbs and John Ireland, the Reeve of Lacombe County. Together, they provided a clear picture of the devastating impacts these cuts to @cdn_agriculture will have across the country. It is a message that cannot be ignored by the government, and this is only the beginning of our fight to stop these cuts.

On March 9th and 10th, organic farmers from across Canada gathered in Ottawa with Canadian Organic Growers (COG) for two days of meetings with Members of Parliament, Senators, and federal officials – bringing a clear message: Canada has a major opportunity to expand domestic organic production and reduce reliance on imports while supporting increased exports.⁠ ⁠ Canada’s organic market is now worth over $10.5 billion annually, yet nearly 80% of organic products in Canada are imported. For many farmers, this represents a clear opportunity: with the right policy supports in place, Canadian producers can meet growing demand at home and abroad.⁠ ⁠ Throughout COG’s Hill Days, farmers spoke directly with representatives from their regions, sharing their on-the-ground experience navigating economic and climate uncertainty, and outlining practical pathways to strengthen resilience and farm profitability. 🚨 Dépendance alarmante vis-à-vis de l’étranger La politique agricole du Conseil fédéral Guy Parmelin ne garantit pas la sécurité alimentaire. Avec un taux d’auto-approvisionnement de seulement 42 %, l’approvisionnement de la population en denrées alimentaires n’est pas assuré en cas d’interruption des importations — que ce soit en raison de guerres, de conflits commerciaux ou d’événements climatiques extrêmes. Jusqu’à présent, la politique agricole n’a en aucun cas préparé notre agriculture à garantir l’alimentation de la population en cas de crise ou de pénurie à partir de son propre sol, comme l’exige l’art. 102 Cst. La Suisse dispose pourtant, en vertu de la loi, de surfaces d’assolement suffisantes à cet effet. 🫛 Manque de production de denrées alimentaires végétales La principale cause de notre faible taux d’auto-approvisionnement est la promotion de la culture de fourrages tels que le maïs et les céréales destinés aux animaux de rente sur 60 % de nos terres arables, au lieu de produire des denrées alimentaires végétales pour l'être humain. Ainsi, plus des deux tiers des aliments d’origine végétale que nous consommons doivent être importés. Parallèlement, nous produisons trop de lait que nous jetons ainsi que du porc que nous exportons à bas prix. 💡 L’initiative comme solution pour un approvisionnement sûr du pays En demandant de viser un taux d’auto-approvisionnement de 70 %, de promouvoir davantage les denrées alimentaires végétales et de réduire le gaspillage alimentaire, l’initiative crée les conditions nécessaires pour que l’approvisionnement du pays puisse être garanti entièrement à partir de notre propre sol en temps de crise. Elle exige également la préservation de la biodiversité et de la fertilité des sols. Actuellement, 75 % des quelque 3,6 milliards de francs de subventions agricoles versées chaque année soutiennent la production animale, et 30 % de notre nourriture finit à la poubelle. Les pesticides et la surfertilisation détruisent la fertilité des sols et la biodiversité, compromettant ainsi les bases mêmes de la production agricole. Soutenez l’initiative dès maintenant.
