INWhat happens when you give an AI a body?
At MIT Media Lab, a researcher connected an AI agent to a shape display made of 900 motorized pins - allowing the system to physically take form for the first time.
Instead of assigning tasks, the goal was different: let the AI discover its own way of existing through movement.
The first thing it did was “breathe.”
The pins slowly rose and fell in a rhythmic pulse.
Then it explored its boundaries, lifting the outer pins to understand where its body ended. Soon after, it began experimenting with gestures - even attempting to communicate through motion.
Because each movement initially took time to generate, the AI created its own solution: a library of physical gestures, essentially building its own body language.
No one told it to do that.
This experiment hints at a fascinating direction for AI research - not just digital intelligence, but agents that can think, move, and communicate through physical form.
The real question is: what happens when multiple AI agents share the same physical space?
