It feels a bit vulnerable in a way posting this… But I’ve been musing on this every time I play my dulcimer. And I thought it might resonate with some folk. Do you struggle to begin new things in the fear of being “bad” at them? Don’t get me wrong. I do love learning. But I’d found myself learning in my comfort zones of art, craft, plant knowledge and cooking etc. I have enough pre existing knowledge in these that any new thing I undertake in them I’m not totally new at. There’s a certain ease. But i’ve never truly properly played a string instrument before the mountain dulcimer! I’ve dabbled in the guitar and banjo and largely given up on both. The number one thing that I’ve found that has helped the most with my surfing is consistency. Being consistent with my surfing has helped me build my confidence in the water (although some days, I’m more timid than others), learn how to position myself, read waves better, increase my wave count, and so many other things. Surfing is a long journey and I still have so much to learn, but I’m grateful for where I am now and all the progress I’ve made since starting. “Spencer! How can I teach my child to read if I can’t read myself?!” I get asked this question at LEAST once a day. Sometimes it’s from folks who use voice to text since they’re not able to write either. Sometimes it’s from folks who CAN read and write but only at a very basic level and they want better for their kids. Nonetheless: its an important question to answer and I hope this answer makes sense. And just to keep it real: the younger your child is, the less important your own reading ability is: you just need to know more than they do (and be willing to teach them what you know.) Hope this helps. And if you’re not a good reader (or are not able to read at all) please know that I’m in your corner, I’m here to support you, and I listen to and respond to EVERY audio message you send. I’ll even reply with audio as well. There’s no reason you can’t be an amazing teacher for your little one. #learningtoread #adultlearning #homeschooltoddler #learninggames #phonics
