TLThe American cattle crisis explained from our local sale barns
We watched two of our local sale barns this week, and on the surface things look “normal.”
Cattle are still selling.
The market is mostly steady.
Feeder calves softened a little.
Cows, bulls, and bred cattle are still bringing strong money.
But that’s only part of the story.
Because zoom out and we are in the middle of a shrinking U.S. cattle herd. After years of drought, a lot of ranchers were forced to sell off mama cows just to stay afloat. And once those cows are gone, it takes YEARS to rebuild.
Now layer in what’s happening globally… War and instability drive oil and fuel prices up, and fuel impacts every single step of raising beef:
• diesel to run equipment
• trucking cattle across the country
• producing and hauling feed
• getting beef to processors and stores
So even if calves bring a little less at the sale barn this week, the cost to raise them hasn’t gone down. In a lot of cases it’s gone up.
That’s the squeeze ranchers are in right now:
High input costs
• smaller herd numbers
• strong consumer demand
= a tightening system
And over time, that leads to exactly what we’re seeing:
Less cattle in the pipeline… and higher beef prices at the store.
This isn’t just a local market update.
This is a snapshot of what’s happening across American agriculture. We’re not at a shortage yet but we are in a rebuilding phase that will take time. And until herd numbers recover, this pressure on prices isn’t going anywhere.

RETechnology is everywhere these days, and it has been inserting itself into agriculture more and more for decades. People always want to find ways to make a job “easier” and less labor intensive. In some ways that makes sense, but it’s also how we have found ourselves in the predicament we are in now— from poison in our foods, soils, waterways, and even our bodies to reliance on huge monocrop farms that are one disease or disaster away from wreaking havoc on our food system. Don’t get us wrong, tractors, ATVs, and the ability to check the weather forecast on our phones makes caring for our cattle a lot easier, and for that we are grateful, but no technology is ever going to be able to take the place of a dedicated human who cares for their herd or their crops.
Feet on the ground studying the soil, noticing the return of the dung beetles, excitedly finding a returning native species of grass, or observing areas of pasture that might need more animal impact to flourish, watching the herd during daily moves to see who will be calving soon, who has the best maternal instincts, knowing at a glance who an animal is… Those things are nuanced and are more than just data to be collected and put into a formula. We believe that time spent physically with the animals and on the land is paramount. You can taste the difference.
Find your local farmers, the ones who get their hands dirty, spend time with their animals and crops, and who can tell you more about their product and its origins than the local grocery store ever dreamed. Support those farmers because that’s where you’ll find the good stuff.

RAIt’s time to get all the scratching posts out! These girls are itching! It’s warmer than usual this time of year and the flies are out early.
We simply go to the local Dept of Transportation and ask for their “used” brushes from their street sweepers. Take the brush to our shop and weld a metal bar or T-post to the top. It not only stops it from sliding down the post in the ground, but gives us something to hang the Python dust bags on.
Now we have Happy Cows!

CLApparently we had a “high heifer percentage” this year… but it sure didn’t feel like it in the chute.
A lot of people ask why we castrate instead of band. When calves are young, cutting allows everything to drain and heal faster with less risk of infection.
Banding works too, but it can take weeks for the tissue to die off and sometimes causes more prolonged discomfort.
Either way, bull calves become steers — which are calmer, safer to handle, and ultimately produce better beef.
Just another not-so-glamorous day on the ranch.
