SHThinking of booking a houseboat in Alleppey? Read this first ⛵️
I skipped the houseboat and tried a shikara ride instead — and I’m so glad I did.
Here’s what I found:
• Houseboats are expensive (~₹15,000)
• They stop by ~6 PM
• After that, they’re parked anywhere — so you don’t always get a good night view
• AC usually works only after 9 PM
• Backwaters can get crowded
• Still water = mosquitoes
• Limited food options
• Best parts (narrow canals) are often extra
Instead, I paid around ₹1000/hour for a shikara and explored the same backwaters — but better.
✔ Peaceful
✔ Less crowded
✔ Narrow canals (best part)
✔ More flexible
How it works:
Book a 3-hour ride → ~2 hours on water + they take you for lunch
You can choose fresh food, they cook it for you, and you can even try toddy.
Best time: 3–6 PM or 4–7 PM 🌅
