@anseladams On this day in 1941, Ansel and his companions were driving toward Santa Fe when he saw the Moon rising over the town of Hernandez. He pulled over the car, hurried to set up his equipment, and instinct took over. Twilight was fading. He couldn’t find his exposure meter. He was running out of time. Later, he wrote: “The situation was desperate… shadow would soon dim the white crosses. I suddenly realized that I knew the luminance of the Moon—250 cd/ft²… I released the shutter knowing I had an unusual photograph. As I reversed the film holder (to make a second negative), the sunlight passed from the crosses; I was a few seconds too late. The lone negative suddenly became precious.” Without his exposure meter, he couldn’t measure the scene’s brightness. But knowing the moon’s luminance gave him the one value he needed to calculate the correct exposure to achieve his visualization. Years of practice and discipline meant he was ready when that fleeting moment appeared. 🎥: Ansel interviewed on The Dick Cavett Show, 1980.

Ansel Adams was an American landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his black-and-white images of the American West. Adams, a native San Franciscan lived most of his life in the city. We have loved his work for a very long time, and recently visited his exhibit at the de Young museum in San Francisco. Seeing his work mainly in black-and-white got me thinking… what if we removed the color from our images? We pride ourselves in capturing a clear blue sky, bright green trees or the impressive red rocks of Utah. It was amazing to see how some of our favorite images were transformed and the different perspective they took simply by changing the color! I would show you a close-up of these prints, but I’m not allowed to. I recently had the chance to visit the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, and it was one of the coolest photographic experiences I’ve ever had. This place is a massive archive of photography—negatives, contact sheets, cameras, letters, notebooks—preserving the legacies of some of the greatest image-makers in history. When I arrived, they had a table full of historic cameras and light meters waiting for me—some of them once belonged to Ansel Adams. Not replicas. His actual gear. And then came the real moment: viewing original Ansel Adams prints. Being in the presence of that work, up close, was humbling. The CCP also houses the Volkerding Study Center, where you can flip through photography books or even request negatives from specific photographers to study their work. #film #photography #filmphotography #AnselAdams #CenterForCreativePhotography #AnalogArchive #ad
