🧠 There are several types of aphasia, which affect people in different ways. Wernicke’s aphasia (aka receptive or “fluent” aphasia) occurs when there is damage to the area of the brain that controls language,the temporal lobe. As a result, people with this type of aphasia have difficulty comprehending what others are saying but are able to speak fluently. Their communication doesn’t follow standard grammar patterns and uses made-up words. Therefore, oftentimes what they say doesn’t make a lot of sense. 🧠 Common causes of aphasia include strokes, traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors. . 🧠Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a central role in the screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of persons with aphasia. Aphasia treatment is individualized to address the specific areas of need identified during assessment, including goals identified by the person with aphasia and their care partners. Answer below - - - - - - - - - 🧠 This is Wernicke’s aphasia — and here’s how you know 👇 The patient speaks fluently, with normal rhythm and intonation — but the words together don’t make sense. Sentences may be long, confident, and grammatically structured… yet completely meaningless 🌀 Key clues pointing to Wernicke’s aphasia: 🗣️ Fluent speech ❌ Poor comprehension 🔄 Uses incorrect words or made-up words (paraphasias) 🤷 Often unaware that their speech is abnormal 📍 The lesion is in Wernicke’s area (posterior superior temporal gyrus), usually due to a left MCA stroke. In July 2005, Jan was soaking up the sun in Mexico with her family.   But while on her dream holiday, she had a stroke at just 46 years old.   Her daughter Carly was at home and received the news from her brother, which left her in shock.   ‘I had a phone call from my brother to say that mum had had a stroke. I didn’t fully understand what it meant.’   ‘She had been on the beach. My dad took a photo of her, and he looked down at it. When he looked back up, she was lying on the beach.’   ‘Luckily, there was an American doctor there who spoke Spanish. He was able to identify that she was having a stroke, and he was able to speak in Spanish to the paramedics.’   Jan’s stroke has left her with weakness on the right side of her body and aphasia, a language disorder that makes it difficult for her to speak.   Over time, she has built up her communication skills, but she can no longer communicate in the ways she used to, so she’s found new methods.   ‘We rely on writing quite a lot to communicate and emojis. Mum is the emoji queen because she can tell a whole story in emojis!’   Since Jan’s stroke, she and Carly have done everything they can to support stroke survivors.   Carly works at the Stroke Association, and Jan volunteers. Together, they started a stroke support group in their local area.   ‘Mum started going to a communication group with the Stroke Association, then we ended up making a whole stroke group!’   The first Christmas after her stroke was extremely tough for Jan.   ‘Mum was so so sad, and she found it difficult. We were still learning how to communicate with each other again.’   Now, twenty years on, and with the right support around her, Jan loves Christmas.   ‘Our Christmases now, everything has changed. I write this with a heavy heart and deep humility. I never imagined I’d be in a position where I’d have to ask my community for help, but today, I find myself here. Many of you know my wife, Trish. For those who don’t, she is a force of nature—full of life, adventure, and an unwavering desire to help others. She is the person who shows up when someone is in need, offering a helping hand without hesitation. Now, she is the one who needs help. On October 26, 2023, a broken piece of heavy gym equipment came crashing down on the front of her head, knocking her to the ground with total memory loss and the biggest dent in her head I’ve ever seen. When she woke up, she wasn’t the same. Trish suffered a traumatic brain and neck injury (TBI), and for the past year and a half, she has battled its devastating effects.
