Since, many of you asked me to do a comparison between the salaries of Government colleges/universities and private colleges/universities, here is it! If you’re planning to become an Assistant Professor, here’s something you should know 👇 In government colleges, salaries usually start around ₹57,000 a month and can go up to ₹1.2 lakh with allowances. You also get job security, regular increments, and better long-term benefits. In private colleges, the pay varies a lot. It can be as low as ₹25,000 or as high as ₹1 lakh a month depending on the college, city, and your qualifications. Some reputed private universities pay really well, but many smaller ones don’t follow UGC pay scales. For a detailed breakdown of both, check out my profile. So tell me, what would you pick…stability or flexibility? Save this reel for future reference. Here’s a clear breakdown of timelines, eligibility, pay scales, and key factors to help you decide. (Note: Salaries may differ depending on the specific government exam and recruitment body such as KVS, DSSSB, UP TET/UPLT Grade, State PSCs, etc.) B.Ed Route (School Teaching – Classes 1–12) Timeline Options: • Integrated BA/BSc B.Ed – 4 years after 12th • Regular B.Ed – 2 years after graduation • New 1-year B.Ed (to be implemented as per NEP) – After MA/PG or 4-year UG (for TGT/PGT roles) Jobs: PRT / TGT / PGT through TET / CTET / State Exams Government Entry Salary: • PRT: ₹42,000–₹45,000/month • TGT: ₹52,000–₹55,000/month • PGT: ₹56,000–₹60,000/month (Overall government range: ₹35,000–55,000+ depending on post and state, plus allowances) Private School Pay: ₹15,000–50,000/month (₹1.8–6 LPA, depending on city and institution) NET Route (College/University Teaching) Timeline: MA (minimum eligibility) → Clear UGC NET → Assistant Professor / PhD (JRF stipend: ₹37,000/month) Jobs: Assistant Professor → Associate Professor → Professor (PhD required for growth) Government University Entry Pay: ₹57,000 basic + allowances = ₹90,000–1.1 lakh/month (₹10L+ annually) Private University Pay: ₹40,000–60,000/month (entry level) • School teaching through B.Ed does not require a PhD. Advancement to Vice-Principal/Principal happens through experience. • NET + PhD route offers higher long-term earning potential (₹15L+ annually at senior levels). • Government roles provide stability and benefits; private sector pay varies by location and institution reputation. Now, the choice is yours. If you are someone who is inclined towards research and have the patience for it, choose academia but tbh both the jobs are rewarding in nature. Joining a school can give a quick start and you can always switch to academic from there, however, that will not help you with your API. To know more about how to boost your API score, comment “API” and I will bring a video on that♥️ . . . . . . . . #foryou #reels #fypppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp #reelinstagram #viral (Asst professor, teacher, UGC, JRF, salary, career, guidance, BEd, job, opportunities)

No one told you about API (Academic Performance Indicator)? This is a scoring system by the UGC (University Grants Commission) that measures a teacher’s contributions across teaching, research, and administration. Essentially your academic report card that follows you throughout your career. It matters in exactly two situations: Getting hired as an Assistant Professor and getting promoted once you are already in the role. Your score is built across 3 categories Category I — Teaching and Evaluation Classroom teaching, tutorials, exam duties, innovative methods. Category II — Co-curricular and Professional Development NCC, NSS, seminars, workshops, cultural activities. Category III — Research Contributions Published papers, books, patents, research grants. Part 1 - Getting hired: Shortlisting point breakdown Post Graduation: 80% and above = 28 pts / 60 to 80% = 25 pts / 55 to 60% = 20 pts M.Phil (Master of Philosophy): 60% and above = 07 pts / 55 to 60% = 05 pts PhD: 30 pts NET (National Eligibility Test) with JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) = 07 pts / NET alone = 05 pts Research publications: 2 pts per paper in peer reviewed or UGC listed journals, max 10 pts Teaching or post doctoral experience: 2 pts per year, max 10 pts Only candidates crossing the minimum threshold get called for interview. Part 2 - Getting promoted: Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) Every year you submit a PBAS (Performance Based Appraisal System) form documenting your API points to your institution’s IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell). A minimum cumulative score over the assessment period is mandatory to move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 or from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. I’m *39, a Doctor (PhD) — and not ashamed to admit that… 1️⃣ At 35, I gave birth to my first child. 💙 And just like that, a 12-year career came to a pause. 2️⃣ I worked damn hard as an Assistant Professor in an Engineering College. After 5 years of service, I was laid off. It took months to recover — it felt like the ground had shifted. 3️⃣ I tried again. Worked across multiple colleges as visiting faculty. Then a second academic position — but the work culture didn’t align. Another door closed. 4️⃣ It was tough to restart holding multiple degrees (M.Tech, MBA, and a Doctorate). But COVID and motherhood changed everything. 5️⃣ At 37 — a mother to a 2-year-old and twice laid off despite all my degrees — I decided to restart. On my own terms. Because my financial freedom felt stuck and I refused to let it stay that way. 6️⃣ I was scared. Camera-shy. I blocked friends and family before going online. And I just hoped I’d make back what I invested — because I needed this to work. Not just for the money. For me. 💡 A message to every woman here: 👉 Maternity is NOT a career full stop. 👉 After facing so much, I decided NO ONE will have the right to control my life. 👉 I became my own boss. I work while being present for my son — every single day. 💰 Last year, I made 5 figures (USD) from my digital business. ❤️ And I’m so glad I made this decision for myself. I love this trend where people share real experiences 🔗 #Mompreneur #FinancialFreedomForWomen #CareerRestart #PassiveIncome #WomenWhoLead DISCLAIMER: Results shared are based on my own experience and select community members. If you are not able to clear NET exam, its doesn’t mean you can’t be a teacher because teaching is much broader than the NET and Assistant Professorship. If you have the right guidance, strategy and passion for the teaching then there are multiple teaching paths available for you in India. 1️⃣School Teacher- You can opt for D.El.Ed (JBT) for a quicker entry into the profession of primary education (1st to 5th class) just with a 12th class mark-sheet. 2️⃣You can pursue B.Ed degree after completing your graduation and after clearing CTET exam, you become eligible to be a Government Teacher. 3️⃣You can become a government teacher by qualifying PRT, TGT/PGT competitive exams through DSSSB, KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya) Recruitment. 4️⃣ You can teach online through platforms like Unacademy, Vedantu, Byju’s etc. 5️⃣ You can even build your own digital course by start teaching on your own channel on YouTube. 6️⃣ You can enter coaching institutes and train students for competitive exams like Drishti IAS, KD Campus etc. So if you have the capability, confidence and consistency for your passion in teaching then there are multiple options for you to start. Teaching is not limited to one exam or one designation so you need to JUST START from one point and GROW MORE.
