AVGliders don’t have engines, so how do you land them?
Well it’s all about planning your circuit and making sure you’re at the right height at each point of the circuit. When you’ve lined-up with the runway you select an aiming point that stands-out from everything else on the runway. Here we’re using the rough patch of runway just before the intersection. Once you start overshooting your aiming point, and by that I mean once your aiming point starts going down the windscreen we apply airbrakes to control our rate of descent. We use pitch to control the attitude and this controls the airspeed, we line the glider up with the landing run with roll and we use airbrakes to control the aiming point. We start the approach with half airbrake and we can adjust it as required.

AVThe Blackburn Buccaneer was a British carrier-borne, low-level strike aircraft that had a focus on nuclear and conventional strike missions. The prototype first flew in 1958 and it entered service with the Royal Navy in 1962. A later version of the Buccaneer would enter service with the Royal Air Force, in the 1970s. The S2D variant was a dedicated anti-ship version and was equipped with avionics and a radar that was optimised for maritime hunting. The role of the Buccaneer was to be taken over by more modern aircraft such as the Panavia Tornado and was retired from service with the British military in the early 1990s.

AVThe de Havilland 125, later known as the Hawker Siddeley HS125, is a twin engine, mid-size jet that was developed in the UK and first flew in 1962 – the year after the Berlin Wall was erected. Following a number of mergers, the production of the aircraft would be taken over by British Aerospace. Developed to meet the demand for a mid-sized business jet, the design was originally influenced by the earlier de Havilland Comet, which was the world’s first jet airliner. The DH 125 was typically powered by two Rolls Royce Viper turbojet engines and could carry between 8 and 10 passengers. Some variants of the 125 were adapted for military roles and the Royal Air Force called theirs the Hawker Siddeley Dominie T1. The type was used as an advanced navigation trainer.

AVThe Handley Page Victor was a British strategic bomber that first flew in 1952 and served with the Royal Air Force from 1958 until 1993. Between 1952-1963 86 Victors would be built including the B1 and B2 bomber variants and the K2 tanker that was used for air-to-air refuelling.
The Victor was part of the V Bomber Fleet which was made-up of the Victor, Valiant and Vulcan. These aircraft were built to replace aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster and the Avro Lincoln and were designed to be Britain’s nuclear deterrents.
The Victor gained fame during the Falklands War in 1982 when modified K2 tankers were used in operation Black Buck, to support the long-range bombing missions carried-out by Avro Vulcans against Argentine forces.
The Nimrod was a maritime patrol and attack aircraft that was in service with the Royal Air Force from 1969 – 2011 and was a development of the world’s first jet airliner – the de Havilland Comet. The latest version of the Nimrod was the MRA4, which was cancelled in 2010.
