CHnever. gets. old. ⚡️
every New Year’s Day i giddily look forward to the annual Rose Parade/Rose Bowl flyover by the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.
third time’s a charm: this year it took 3 opportunities due to a very rainy first half of the first day of the year. the planned 8:00 am flyover of the parade was cancelled at the last minute due to poor visibility (the fog/rain at 8 am was so thick i couldn’t see down my street).
then the 2nd planned opportunity at kickoff of the Rose Bowl football game was also cancelled due to low cloud cover, but word got around they were gonna aim for the start of the 3rd quarter if weather improved (so i went and got lunch nearby while monitoring the game).
then finally as halftime came to an end, a small-but-dedicated eager crowd at my favorite viewing spot saw it come through the clouds over the mountains, aiming square for the stadium. and, as anticipated, it throttled up as it flew over and let out a glorious, thunderous roar that overwhelmed my iphone’s mic as you hear in the vid.
a guy driving by almost hung his entire body out of the car window trying to get a look at the otherworldly shape flying overhead and reactively let out an earnest “WOW!” 😅
oh yeah - their call sign for radio transmissions? DEATH11. yeah 💀
10/10 never gets old. see you next year, Spirit ⚡️🦇💨

THThe crash of a Northrop B-2 Spirit at Andersen Air Force Base in 2008 was one of the most significant incidents involving the stealth bomber.
Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced issues caused by faulty sensor data, which led the flight control system to misinterpret the aircraft’s condition. This resulted in an improper pitch-up during rotation, causing the aircraft to lose control and crash.
