How does a neural network actually learn? 🧠 Backpropagation. 1️⃣ Forward pass → make a prediction 2️⃣ Compute loss → measure the error 3️⃣ Backward pass → trace the blame (chain rule) 4️⃣ Update weights → learn from mistakes Repeat thousands of times. Follow for more @unfoldedai Backpropagation is an important algorithm used to train neural networks, letting them learn from data by adjusting their parameters/weights. Backpropagation helps the network understand how changes to its parameters affect the overall loss/cost. This is where the chain rule from calculus comes in. Backpropagation works by computing how the error at the output layer flows backward through the network, layer by layer. It allows the model to compute pieces of the derivative and put them together; this determines how each layer’s weights contribute to the final error. By doing this, the algorithm can figure out how much each weight needs to change to minimize the loss/cost function, making a more accurate and useful model. Backpropagation is one of the core ideas behind deep learning today, even though its origins go farther back than most people realize. Paul Werbos first formalized the method in his 1974 PhD thesis, showing how gradients could be calculated efficiently in multi-layer neural networks. Early AI researchers, including Marvin Minsky, were cautious about it at first. It looked slow, costly, and difficult to use compared to simpler approaches. But as computing power increased, real experiments started proving how effective it actually was. Gradually, backpropagation became the standard way to train deep networks. It changed the entire field by allowing models to learn complex structures in data, powering breakthroughs in areas like computer vision, language understanding, and more. Today, backpropagation remains essential. Modern systems, including large language models such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek, are built on this foundation. Backpropagation can be understood mathematically by viewing the model’s total error as a point on a high-dimensional loss surface formed by all its parameters. Each parameter slightly affects the overall loss, and the gradient is the vector that collects all partial derivatives, telling us how the loss changes with respect to every parameter. By combining these derivatives through the chain rule, backprop efficiently computes the full gradient of the network. The negative gradient then gives the direction of steepest descent, and if we travel in this direction, it's kind of like to rolling a ball downhill along the slope of a landscape. Iteratively stepping in this direction gradually moves the model toward lower regions of the loss surface, improving its performance over time, leading to actual, usable results. That's how models learn. C: Welch Labs Want to Learn In-Depth Machine Learning Topics? Join 8000+ Others in our Visually Explained Deep Learning Newsletter (link in bio). This image shows how backpropagation works in a neural network 🧠. You feed inputs 𝑥1, 𝑥2, 𝑥3, into the network 👉, they pass through hidden neurons, and the network gives a predicted output 🎯. . Then we compare that prediction with the actual answer to calculate the error ❌. . That error is sent backward through the network 🔄, and every weight (w1, w2, w3…) is adjusted so the model learns from its mistake and improves next time 📉➡️📈. . If backpropagation has ever felt like a black box, this lecture fixes that. This is the first video from Andrej Karpathy’s Neural Networks: Zero to Hero series, and it’s hands down the most step-by-step explanation of how neural networks actually train. He doesn’t just explain the math — he builds backprop from scratch using a tiny framework called micrograd (a simplified version of PyTorch’s autograd). You literally see: • how derivatives flow through a computation graph • how gradients are computed and accumulated • how a neuron becomes a neural network • how loss + gradient descent actually train a model It only assumes: ✔️ basic Python ✔️ a vague memory of high-school calculus If you’re learning ML and want to actually understand what’s happening under the hood — save this. Paul Werbos introduced the foundations of backpropagation in his 1974 PhD thesis, outlining a systematic method for efficiently calculating gradients in multi layer neural networks. Although the algorithm later became central to deep learning, its importance was not widely recognized at the time. In the early years of artificial intelligence research, some influential figures, including Marvin Minsky, were skeptical about using backpropagation. Many researchers believed it would be too computationally expensive or unreliable compared to simpler models, which slowed its adoption despite the powerful potential it held. Backpropagation, the algorithm that efficiently computes gradients for training neural networks, went through several key stages in AI history. Early neural network research in the 1960s, including work by Marvin Minsky and Seymour Papert, highlighted serious limitations of simple perceptrons, which contributed to reduced interest in neural networks for a time. In the 1970s, Paul Werbos proposed using the chain rule to propagate error gradients backward through multilayer networks, laying the theoretical foundation for backpropagation. The method was later popularized and demonstrated effectively in the 1980s by researchers such as Rumelhart, Hinton, and Williams, showing that multilayer networks could be trained to learn complex functions. This development transformed neural networks from limited single-layer models into multilayer networks powered by GPU power, helping enable modern deep learning.
