FANo political message here—just sharing the strange feeling of visiting a place that still feels frozen in Soviet times.
Coal mining in Svalbard began in the early 1900s, when the archipelago was still no man’s land. American and Norwegian companies came first, followed by Russian ones in the 1920s. In 1931, the Soviet state-owned company Arktikugol bought several sites and boosted coal production to support the USSR. Today, Barentsburg is the only remaining Russian settlement with an active mine. Urban development is slow here, so despite a few modern buildings, much of the town still echoes the past.
