How to cook Barley Barley is easy to cook on the stove! Just simmer with water and you have a tasty whole grain that can be used in a variety of ways. Always rinse barley before adding it to the pot. This will remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated on the grains. It will also remove some extra starch from the grains. This starch makes the end result grains stickier. There are 2 types of barley you could be making: hulled barley or pearl barley. It’s important to know which one you have because the cooking time is different for the two. Pearl barley has had an extra layer removed from the top of the grain, resulting in a quicker cook time and softer texture. Hulled barley cooks longer and is chewier. When cooking barley, use 3 cups of water for every 1 cup of dry barley. One cup of dry barley will make approximately 3 1/2 cups of cooked barley Ingredients * 1 cup dry barley pearl or hulled * 3 cups water Instructions * Rinse the dry barley grains under cold water to remove any dirt and excess starch.
 * Add water and dry barley to pot on the stove. Bring to a boil over high heat. 
 * Lower the heat to a simmer the pot. Pearl Barley will simmer for about 25 mins, while hulled barley will need 40. 
 * After the required time, check the barley for desired chewiness. If you'd like it softer, add a little water and continue to simmer until water is absorbed. (If too much water is added and the grain reaches desired texture, drain the excess water).

Swapped my regular dosa with this barley moong dal version… and it feels so much lighter in this heat 🌞 Would you try this combo? #barley #dosa #summerrecipes Per Dosa (1 out of 7)( approx) Calories: ~75–85 kcal Protein: ~4–4.5 g Carbs: ~13–15 g Fat: ~0.5–1 g (depends on oil) Fiber: ~3–3.5 g Ingredients: • 1/2 cup barley • 1/2 cup moong dal (~200 g, split green or yellow) • 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds • 2 teaspoons red chili (adjust to taste) • Salt – as per taste • Water – as needed • Oil – for greasing the pan Wash and soak barley, moong dal, and fenugreek seeds in water for 5–6 hours. Drain and add red chili and blend into a smooth batter with little water. Cover and leave the batter to ferment overnight (8–9 hours), or until slightly risen and airy. Heat a tawa (flat pan) and lightly grease with oil. Pour a ladle of batter and spread in a circular motion into a thin dosa. Drizzle a few drops of oil around the edges. Cook until golden brown and crisp. Flip if you prefer, or serve directly. Pair with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, or sambar.

I love barley- it’s so versatile, and has the most pleasing taste + texture. Here’s the recipe that needs very little active cooking time, and makes for the perfect dinner option. Serves 2 Soak overnight/ at least 6-7 hours (if planning for dinner, just soak after breakfast) 1/2 cup barley 2 Tbsp chickpeas Now, to start cooking, we’ll need 250 gms pumpkin, grated - get the perfect ripe orange one that has a natural sweetness In a large pot (that would fit inside your pressure cooker), heat 1 Tbsp ghee to which you’ll add 2-3 red chilies 1 small/ half a bay leaf 1/4 tsp turmeric powder Add the grated pumpkin The soaked barley-chickpeas (after discarding the soaking water and washing twice) Now add just enough water to cover the mixture- this was 1.25 cups of water for me. The pumpkin also gives off moisture, so if you add too much water, the mixture will be soupy- we want creamy. Add salt, to taste. Mix well, and pressure cook for 5-6 whistles/ for as long as you pressure cook when cooking chickpeas. Now, once uncovered- taste and see if you need to adjust Salt Sugar- if your pumpkin isn’t sweet, add some sugar, really helps with the flavour. Also, if there is a little extra water, just return the pot to the gas, and stir-uncovered till the water evaporates and you get a creamy consistency. Now, for the final flourish. This is optional. You can just as well add the kalonji to the pot before the chilies, if you are in a rush (and truly want this to be a one-pot meal). Heat 1 Tbsp ghee and add 1/4 tsp kalonji 1/2 red chili, cut into strips Mix half of it in, and drizzle the rest over your plate. Made this for a friend who had come for lunch yesterday, and she suggested adding some cheese would also work well, kind of channeling a pumpkin risotto. No Rice or Rava Idli Dosa Batter / Perfect for Summer ☀️ Recipe Barley - 2 cups Moong dal - 3/4 cup Urad dal - 3/4 cup Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tbsp Rinse couple of times or until the water runs clear Soak for 5 to 6 hours Grind into a smooth consistency by adding some water. The batter should be neither too thick nor too runny. Add Salt accordingly Mix well (preferably with your hands for better fermentation) Cover and let it ferment overnight (for 8 hours) For idlis, steam them for about 12 - 15 minutes on medium heat. Start timing after the steam starts coming out well. To check, insert a toothpick or knife, if it comes out clean, your idlis are done. Let them rest for 2–3 minutes before removing for soft and fluffy results You can store your barley idli dosa batter in the fridge for about 3 to 4 days in an airtight container. Since it’s fermented, the batter may become a little more sour over time, so try to use it within 2–3 days for the best taste and texture. Always keep it refrigerated and mix it well before using. This barley idli dosa batter is a great summer-friendly option because it’s light, cooling, and easy on the stomach. Since it’s made without rice, it’s higher in fiber, which helps digestion and keeps you full for longer without feeling heavy. The natural cooling effect of barley helps manage body heat and keeps you refreshed in hot weather. Fermentation also adds good probiotics, supporting gut health.
