I do a great job bottling my emotions but dam my nephew is only getting better. The only boy, the middle child. 3 things I would have done differently in the basketball recruiting process: 1️⃣ Film Every Game - Starting my junior year of high school I would film every one of my games. Not only would it have helped me improve my on court play, but it is also the #1 tool for getting recruited. If coaches can’t see you play, they won’t recruit you. 2️⃣ Take Control & Reach Out First - I would’ve started researching schools early and reaching out to as many coaches as possible. Not just sending highlights, but making it easy for them: a short mixtape, my grades, my interest in their school, my coach’s contact info, and any extracurriculars to show I’m a well-rounded recruit. Waiting for coaches to find you is NOT a strategy. 3️⃣ Follow Up Relentlessly - One email isn’t enough. I would’ve followed up consistently, updating coaches on my progress, sending full-game film, and even visiting campuses if possible. Interest can fade fast—if you’re not in a coach’s ear, they’ll move on to the next player. If you’re in the recruiting process right now, take control. No one’s going to hand you an offer. The biggest mistake I made in high school hoops? Chasing the highest level instead of the right fit. I thought I had to prove something by playing at the biggest school, on the biggest stage. But looking back… it was never about that. It was always about fit. ✅ Go where you’re valued. You want to be somewhere the staff believes in you. Develops you. Not somewhere you’re just another name on a long roster. ✅ Know your role — and lean into it. Don’t chase clout. Chase opportunity. The right role at the right place can do way more for your career than sitting behind a stacked rotation just for the name on the jersey. ✅ Fit > Level D1, D2, NAIA, JUCO — none of that defines you. Where you land should be where you can grow, play, and thrive. ✅ I’ll preach this to anyone who’ll listen. Because I lived it. And I’ve seen way too many hoopers lose their love for the game by chasing the wrong thing. #BasketballRecruiting #HighSchoolBasketball #BasketballAdvice
