THChapter 5️⃣1️⃣9️⃣ Present: We are told so much these days to ‘live in the present’ but what happens when your present is torture? Patient life so often feels like a life of waiting, mostly waiting to feel better ⏰.
I had this big universe dream that I had put in all those hours of patient life, gained all the experience, seen everything I needed to see 🔮. I hoped upon hoped that I’d bring out my book ‘Be Patient’ and finally get my happy ending 📖✨.
All I want is to to well enough now to put all my energy into changing patient care, instead I seem to still be using that energy for ‘survival mode’ 🥹. If I’ve learnt anything about patient life it’s the opening line of my book…
’Being ill is not a choice.’
I can hope, believe, do everything within my power to help myself but I can’t control it all. Patient life is unpredictable 🎢.
This week I am back in Düsseldorf at Magic Man’s clinic (thank goodness for this hero family 🫶) still having horrible feverish sweats and chills and feeling like my body is riddled with infection 🥹. It’s a feeling I know too well from the past 🦠🙈. Infection drags you down and consumes you like nothing else.
I’m now patiently waiting for the antibiotics to kick in and to calm it all down 💊but as always it’s taking a lot longer than I would like…
“Why does it keep happening?” I say to Mum, between tears tonight.
“I don’t know what to say anymore Tilly,” she replies.
When Mum doesn’t know what to say anymore, it doesn’t feel good. Mum always knows what to say.
“Like you, I could kind of explain it until now. You were gaining all that experience of patient life for your book which WILL change patient care but I also thought ‘Be Patient’ would come out and you’d get better.”
Me too.
“But remember Magic Man’s words,” she reminds me.
This week when I was freezing cold, drenched in sweat and feeling utterly hopeless Dr Sahinbas (aka Magic Man) reiterates “You must never give up.” 💪💪💪
