Bumblebees are back! 🐝 We just love seeing our buzzing friends re-emerging - a sure sign that spring is here! ☀️ Did you know that Bumblebee Conservation Trust has created a surveying scheme that allows anyone and everyone to help their local bumblebees by recording what’s out there? It’s called BeeWalk! Here at Species on the Edge, we’re helping people get started by leading guided BeeWalks, introducing people to the survey scheme and showing them the diversity of bumblebees they have on their doorstep. Our North Coast team are kicking off their monthly guided BeeWalks on May 6th in Thurso - if you’re in the area, join in! Find all the details on our events page. We joined Ranger Rob to survey our resident bees! 🐝 Did you know that there are 24 bumblebee species in the UK and 23 in Wales? So far, we’ve recorded 13 species at Bluestone! 📝 We began surveying in 2021 as part of the Beewalk survey scheme ran by the @bumblebeeconservationtrust, and carry them out every month from March to October. Here are Ranger Rob’s top three tips for bee surveying: No. 1 👉 GET INVOLVED! No. 2 👉 Learn the different bumblebee species. No. 3 👉 Practice! There are many resources available on the Beewalk website including I.D training videos and printable guides. Our grass is “a bit long” but the bees and goldfinches are loving the dandelions and other wildflowers at the moment. Not one, but two Tree Bumblebee nests were discovered yesterday along the #BeeWalk transect at Gosforth Nature Reserve – what a fantastic way to celebrate World Bee Day! 🐝🌍 Did you know? Tree Bumblebees are a relatively new arrival in the UK, first recorded in 2001. Since then, they've spread rapidly and are now one of the UK's 'Big Eight' common and widespread bumblebee species. A busy bee walk today with lots of international students taking up the challenge of catching bees to id. It’s always much easier to catch them than you think, although with 270 species of bees it can be hard to id. We were focussed on the big 8 of the 24 Bumblebee species in the uk and the odd honey bee too. Borage, and the purple and yellow Buddleia were the best spots to see them as the sunflowers were too tall! Today we recorded at least one new queen! Bee Friends Open Afternoon at Sheepdrove on Saturday 31st August at 2.30pm. Join us for a special monthly Bee Walk at Sheepdrove and the opportunity to tour our bee-friendly market garden, find out about growing courses you can take and buy plants and produce. You will also be able to pedal your own fruit smoothie on a smoothie bike. Did you know that we depend on pollinators for successful crops of over 130 fruits and vegetables? Even dairy and meat production relies on pollinators as legumes such as clovers, beans and vetches that provide high quality grazing also require pollination. Many thanks to Penny Locke @penny__post for sharing this video of our June #beewalk @sheepdrove Bee Walks are a national recording scheme run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BCT) @bumblebeeconservationtrust to monitor the abundance of bumblebees on transects (paths along which one counts and records occurrences of the objects of study) across the country. These transects would be impossible without volunteers, who identify and count the bumblebees they see on a monthly walk along a set route from March to October.

Lots of wildlife in the park and Old Orchard today! We carried out our first BeeWalk* of 2024, surveying the numbers of bumblebees in the area. Very pleased to spot lots of them enjoying the blackthorn blossom and crocuses.Also very encouraging to see large numbers of Brimstone butterflies, a few Peacock butterflies and a Comma butterfly!. A friendly robin kept an eye on our volunteers as they repaired a sign! *BeeWalk is a national recording scheme run by the @BBCT to monitor the numbers of bumblebees on transects across the country.
