When we switched from a standard American mattress to a Japanese floor mattress from @the_futon_shop, I did not realize how much our bodies had been compensating. On softer mattresses, your muscles are constantly subtly engaged trying to stabilize you. They never fully let go. That is why so many people wake up with sore backs, tight necks, or aching hips. Your body has been working all night instead of truly resting. Sleeping on a firmer surface made from simple natural fibers like cotton and wool has been completely different. There is no sinking, no fighting for alignment. Our spines feel supported, our muscles actually relax, and our bodies settle. I wake up without back pain. The kids sleep deeper and rarely wake in the middle of the night. It feels like our nervous systems can finally exhale. And one of the sweetest, most unexpected parts is how easy family sleepovers have become.
