This week, April 11–17, marks Black Maternal Health Week. It’s a vital time to spotlight the alarming racial disparities in maternal care. In the U.S., Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. This isn’t just a statistic. It’s a call to action. Let’s uplift the work of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and other reproductive justice organizations fighting for equity, dignity, and life-saving care for all. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #BlackMamasMatter #ReproductiveJustice #HealthEquityNow #StandWithBlackWomen #EndMaternalMortality #BirthJustice

The amount of self advocacy I had to do during my pregnancy almost stole away the beauty, excitement, and joy of the experience. I wanted to talk about this for #BlackMaternalHealthWeek because when we only see statistics it can feel more than a little bit abstract. @blackmamasmatter is working towards solutions and I’m honored to use my story to elevate their work!

In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, we’re revisiting this impactful moment with our Baby2Baby Angel and 2025 Gala Honoree @serenawilliams. She shared her experience with life-threatening pregnancy complications, reflecting the harsh reality that Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. Maternal mental health is at the center of this crisis, yet too many mothers face it without the support they need. That’s why Baby2Baby distributes Maternal Health and Newborn Supply Kits to new mothers at hospitals nationwide, ensuring they have the critical items they need for themselves and their babies during such a vulnerable time. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek

❤️‍🩹 There’s a reason I never shared this. I’m not sure if you can tell but I think this video really shows how miserable I was until about 30 weeks. I was very sick, I threw up everyday of my pregnancy & every hour during delivery. I lost of lot of weight, my chronic pain skyrocketed, my grief felt brand new, I ran into so many issues with my healthcare & was terrified most of the time. I don’t like to complain so I didn’t talk about it. This resulted in a lot of trauma and ongoing fear for others because I know I’m not alone. I am so grateful I was able to get pregnant & deliver your color me nephew (I mean, you’re welcome 😉 isn’t he a joy!) But that gratitude has probably caused me to be less open about the process & hardships. It’s taken me a while to realize, two things can be true: I can be grateful but also upset. I can be happy, healing but also have trauma. & now, I’m trying to find the strength to not let either stop me from being more open about my story, because I don’t want anyone else to feel how I felt.
As a Black women, as a mother in this country & as a chronic illness sufferer I wish I would have seen a story similar to mine to help me be better prepared or just feel less alone. So as I begin to share my story more over the next week ish (give me some time 😅) I hope being open does just that. Until then, feel free to ask me anything below, and I’ll try to ensure the content I make responds to your questions. &&& if you don’t care that’s okay. We’ll be back to your regularly scheduled fashion, confidence & color programming - I actually have something exciting & non mom related to share tomorrow bc moms are more than one thing 🥰 Thanks for letting me be open with you on my own timeline - appreciate you endlessly #blackmaternalhealth #blackmaternalhealthweek #pregnant #pregnancy

Uplift and advocate for them. Provide them with adequate care. Care for Black mothers as much as you do any other mother. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek
