Your Gums Are Bleeding For a Reason 🚨🦷
(And It’s NOT What You Think) Bleeding gums aren’t “normal.”
They’re a red flag—literally. If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, you could already have gingivitis — the earliest stage of gum disease. Here’s the deal:
👉 Gingivitis is caused by plaque buildup at the gumline.
👉 That inflammation? It’s your body screaming, “DO BETTER.” Healthy gums do NOT bleed. Ever.
So if you see pink in the sink...
Don’t ignore it. Don’t wait.
Fix it before it turns into something serious. I’m Dr. Miles Madison, Beverly Hills Periodontist.

Stop Obsessing Over Hygiene! If You Have Gum Disease, Focus on This Instead. tired of that feeling you have when you leave the dental office feeling bummed out that you got another bad report of bleeding gums and increased pocket drops? You feel like you’re doing everything right at home and following all the instructions but no matter what you do you seem like you’re failing? I see you and I want to tell you that we are missing the mark. Here are some other things to consider if you’re dealing with chronic gum and periodontal disease: 🔬 1. It’s not just about brushing and flossing. – Periodontal disease often persists despite perfect hygiene. – Overcleaning won’t fix microbial imbalance or systemic dysfunction. – Frequent cleanings help but aren’t the full solution. 🦠 2. Know your oral pathogens. – Get your oral microbiome tested (OralDNA, @bristlehealth (links in my bio)). – Pathogens like P. gingivalis, T. denticola, F. nucleatum = red flags. – These bacteria are immune-evasive and can drive chronic inflammation. – Mechanical removal alone won’t eliminate them—targeted therapies are needed. 🧬 3. Investigate systemic drivers. – Gum disease can reflect metabolic dysfunction and immune dysregulation. – Screen for prediabetes, insulin resistance, and autoimmune markers. – Check micronutrient status: vitamin C, zinc, selenium, copper, omega-3s. – Consider methylation and detox genes (e.g., MTHFR, GSTT1). 🧠 4. Treat the root cause. – Think: immune support, inflammation modulation, and microbiome rebalance. – Add in ozone, sulforaphane, CoQ10, and diet low in processed carbs. – Periodontal disease is a symptom, not just a dental issue. I’m sure they’ll be questions on this one, so how can I help? I’ll cover topic in more detail in my newsletter next week. So if you’re looking for deeper dives on topics like gum and periodontal disease, more than I can cover in a quick Instagram Reel, please consider signing up for my newsletter, OPEN WIDE with Doctor Staci, link in bio or sign up at doctorstaci.com 🤍Doctor Staci

Bleeding gums are often treated as a flossing problem. In reality, they’re usually a signal. When plaque and biofilm build up between the teeth, the gums become chronically inflamed and fragile. That inflammation makes them bleed more easily, not because flossing is bad, but because the tissue isn’t healthy to begin with. Gum health reflects lifestyle: nutrition, stress, sleep, and overall metabolic health. Healthy gums are firm, pink, and resilient. They don’t bleed easily. So yes, floss, but do it gently. And if bleeding is persistent, don’t just floss harder. Look upstream at the habits that created the inflammation in the first place. Oral health is a mirror of whole-body health. Can bleeding gums really lead to a heart attack at 35? Yes. But here’s the hopeful part: your mouth can also be the starting point for healing. Bleeding gums mean inflammation—usually from gum disease. Gum disease lets bacteria into the bloodstream. Those bacteria and immune signals can: Drive plaque buildup in arteries Trigger vessel damage Raise CRP, a marker tied to heart attack risk Your gums are a window into your body. Inflammation here means something bigger might be going on. The data backs this up… A 2019 BMJ Open study found gum disease doubled the risk of cardiovascular disease. A large review in Journal of the American Heart Association showed a 28% increased heart attack risk with gum disease. (PMID: 36923959) But here’s the good news… This is a fixable problem. With the right dentist, you can treat gum disease and lower whole-body inflammation. You’re not just preventing cavities. You’re protecting your heart, your brain, your future. What I tell my patients… Floss every day. Bleeding means you need to, not that you should stop. Skip harsh mouthwash. It harms your oral microbiome. Ask your dentist about pocket depth. More than 3mm? That’s worth addressing. Take your symptoms seriously. Bleeding, puffy gums, or bad breath aren’t just cosmetic. This is why functional dentistry matters. You need a dentist who’s a great clinician, yes—but also someone who’s a systems thinker. Someone who’ll ask why your gums are bleeding. And someone who’ll connect the dots between oral and whole-body health. If that sounds like the kind of care you want, comment “DENTIST” and I’ll send you a link to our directory of functional dentists who think this way. And if you’re a dentist already thinking like this, then I’d like to invite you to join my CE course this summer…email me at mark@askthedentist.com for details

𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟑 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐬 ⁣ 1️⃣ “𝘔𝘺 𝘨𝘶𝘮𝘴 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴.” → FALSE! Bleeding gums are a result of inflammation and a sign you should be flossing MORE. After 2 weeks of consistent flossing, bleeding should reduce. If not you’re most likely due for a dental cleaning. ⁣ ⁣ 2️⃣ “𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘱 𝘮𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘹-𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳.” → FALSE! Dental radiographs have an extremely low dose of radiation. For example, the radiation exposure from a set of check up X-rays is less than that from a LA to NY flight.⁣ ⁣ 3️⃣ “𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘤 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 (𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦)” → FALSE! There is no sound evidence to support these claims. Removing a tooth causes bone loss, adjacent teeth to drift and increases your chances of losing more teeth. It is more conservative to save your tooth with a root canal when possible. ⁣ ⁣ 💡 Follow @drshahirasaad for more dental tips!⁣ ⁣ 📌 The information provided on Instagram is for entertainment and educational purposes only, and does not replace informed advice from a dental professional. ⁣ ⁣ #dentist #dentalmyths #dentaltips #rosalia

1. Your teeth remember every habit you have — even the ones you think are invisible. 2. Bleeding gums are never “normal.” It’s the first stage of gum disease — and it’s reversible only now. 3. Cavities aren’t caused by sugar — they’re caused by sugar sitting on your teeth too long. Time matters more than quantity. 4. 80% of bad breath doesn’t come from the stomach — it comes from your tongue. Clean it. 5. Brushing harder doesn’t clean better — it destroys enamel. Gentle pressure is stronger in the long run. 6. Your dentist can spot stress, anxiety, and even eating disorders — just by looking at your teeth. 7. Flossing isn’t optional. It cleans the 40% of the tooth surface your brush can’t reach. 8. Whitening doesn’t damage your teeth — unless you use random products without supervision. 9. Grinding your teeth at night is your jaw trying to “survive” stress. It’s not a random habit — it’s your nervous system. 10. Most people think cavities hurt. They don’t. They hurt only when the damage is already deep. 11. You can have perfect-looking teeth — and still have gum disease silently destroying the bone beneath. 12. Mouth breathing while you sleep changes your face structure over time — especially in kids. 13. A dental implant is the closest thing to a real tooth — but it’s still not better than your original one. Protect what you have. 14. Brushing right after coffee or wine is bad. The acid softens enamel — wait 30 minutes first. 15. Invisalign isn’t just cosmetic — fixing your bite can prevent jaw pain and migraines. 16. If your gums recede, they never grow back naturally. Prevention is everything. 17. Worn-down front teeth often mean digestive reflux — dentists see internal health before you feel symptoms. 18. Chewing ice is not “harmless.” It causes microfractures — and one day, it just breaks. 19. A healthy mouth can add up to 10 years to your life. Gum disease is linked to heart attacks and dementia. 20. Kids mimic their parents’ hygiene. If you don’t floss — they won’t. 21. Your smile won’t be remembered for perfection — but your energy behind it always will. #dentist #teeth #dentista #teethwhitening #teethtips
