The body operates according to the laws of physics, not just sensation. 1. It might sound like old wives' tales: wear socks to avoid getting sick. But Swiss researchers from the University of Bern conducted a study and found that warming your feet helps you fall asleep 15–20 minutes faster and improves sleep quality. The reason was purely physiological, not psychological. 2. To fall asleep, your core body temperature needs to drop by 1–2 degrees Celsius. The brain interprets this drop as a signal to stop activity. But how does the body get rid of this heat? This happens through the extremities. Blood vessels in the hands and feet dilate, increasing blood flow and releasing heat. If the extremities are cold, the vessels constrict, preventing heat from escaping. 3. The paradox: to cool down, you must first warm your feet. Warm socks dilate blood vessels and open "heat-dissipating channels." Heat then escapes from the feet, lowering core body temperature, and the brain receives the signal: it's time to sleep. Cold feet = blocked valves = no heat loss = difficulty falling asleep. 4. Studies show that people with cold feet need an average of 25 minutes more time to fall asleep, and their deep sleep stage is shorter. This is due to a disruption in the body's temperature regulation; the body wastes energy warming the extremities instead of entering deep, restorative sleep. 5. You don't need to sleep in socks all night. You can put them on before bed and take them off once you fall asleep (many people do this automatically), or use a heating pad on your feet for 20 minutes before bed. The key is to dilate blood vessels and stimulate heat loss. After that, the body takes care of the rest. It's simple… but there's a whole new and amazing mechanism behind it.
