CLThe century plant, also known as Agave Americana, is famous for its rare once in a lifetime bloom. After decades of storing energy in its thick succulent leaves, it sends up a towering flower stalk that can reach 20 to 30 feet tall and grow nearly a foot per week. This dramatic flowering phase is called monocarpic blooming, meaning the plant flowers once and then dies after exhausting its stored energy. During this final stage, the agave produces offsets and bulbils, essentially clones that ensure the next generation continues growing. These massive blooms can suddenly appear in neighborhoods, deserts, and landscapes, turning an ordinary agave into a towering natural spectacle before the cycle resets.
