LAThere are some truths here…let me clear it up for you!
1. Painting your brick white is “trendy”: False! Some of the most classic, colonial style homes in this country are white brick. This style is timeless, and if done right, will never “date your home.”
2 & 3. It destroys the brick/brick needs to breathe: true and false! Any product that “seals” the brick (I’m looking at you, “brick primer”) will not allow the brick to breathe. This essentially traps moisture in the brick and will cause it to decay over time. You always want to use a mineral based paint or a brick stain. My favorite, and what we used, is the Masonry Flat product from Romabio.
4. It will peel and chip: again, this is true is you choose to use “paint!” When you paint a brick house, you are going to have to repaint every 5 years or so. This is EXPENSIVE. With a mineral product or brick stain, the product absorbs IN TO the brick…there is nothing to peel and chip. You only need to repaint after years and years of wear, when the stain may start to look faded. The product we used has a 20 YEAR warranty.
