To celebrate European Wool Day, we feel incredibly grateful for the relationship we have with wool, with our sheep, and with the farmers we work alongside @emerald_romneys We partner only with those who share our values of sustainability and animal welfare, sourcing directly from their farms and seeing first-hand the care given to both land and flock. Through these relationships, we are not only supporting farmers, but slowly reclaiming our appreciation for Irish wool, while building our own flock of Romney and Bluefaced Leicester sheep in Co. Wicklow. For decades, Irish farmers have faced the reality that wool was worth less than the cost of shearing. Through our Farm to Yarn network, we are working to change that, ensuring a fair and fixed price for the wool we use. And at the heart of it all is how wool truly is extraordinary. It is: 💚 Renewable, growing back year after year. 💚Biodegradable, returning gently to the earth. 💚Breathable, working in harmony with the body. 💚Strong and long-wearing, softening over time. 💚Naturally resistant to odour and stains. 💚Safe, anti-bacterial and flame-retardant. 💚Regulates temperature, keeping warmth in and releasing it when needed. 💚And it is carbon-friendly, part of a natural cycle that gives back to the land. The sheep were starting to outgrow their coats as they get bigger with pregnancy and their wool continues to grow before being shorn this spring. We changed their coats and trimmed their nails this week, and I am amazed at how gorgeous their wool looks underneath! Their heads and feet get so dirty and filled with hay and other plant matter by this time of the year. It's a marvel to see what lovely wool we have to look forward to when we have warmer temperatures and can relive these ladies (and Rupert) of their locks. @marneybroderick would never toot her own horn, but her fleeces won 1st and 2nd place for fine and long fiber at the great lakes fiber festival 2 years ago. I have no doubt that the wool this year will be just as beautiful and lovely to work with for fiber artists.
