📊 Mid-Winter #WaterSupply Update: What’s Ahead for 2026? MWDOC’s latest eCurrents article, written by Senior Water Resources Analyst Kevin Hostert, breaks down five key water supply findings shaping our outlook as we head into spring. Here’s what we’re watching: 🌊 Reservoir levels rebounding in Northern California ❄️ Snowpack remains below average, despite early storms 📉 Water use continues at historically low levels in Orange County 🌎 Ongoing #ColoradoRiver negotiations impacting long-term supply 💧 Orange County’s local groundwater basin remains strong and resilient Understanding these trends helps guide smart planning and ensure reliable water for our communities. ||🔎 Want to dive deeper? After a long drought, it’s refreshing to see landscapes come back to life with green hills and blooming flowers. 🌿 The rain has helped, and we’re grateful for it. But in California, conditions can shift quickly. The best time to prepare for the next drought isn’t during a crisis… it’s now. 🌧️ ☀️ While you fine-tune efficiency at home, we’re strengthening wells, recycled water, and storage systems across the region to keep water reliable year-round. Good water years help us get ready for the dry ones. 💧 Learn more at WesternWaterCA.gov/SaveWater.

California's February Water Update 💧 The past 10 days brought a strong boost statewide — precipitation now averages around 110%, with colder storms significantly improving snowpack. Statewide snow water content is near 75% of average, and April 1st average jumped nearly 20 points to about 59%. Northern storage remains solid across Shasta Lake, Lake Oroville, and Folsom Lake, while allocation announcements from state and federal agencies are top of mind for growers. We also cover Delta exports, San Luis storage, SGMA updates in Tule and Tulare Lake, and what it all means heading into March. Watch the full update to stay ahead of California water conditions. 🌊 #CaliforniaWater #AgWater #WaterUpdate #SGMA #CentralValley

California’s largest agricultural water recycling project is set to breathe new life into the landscapes of southern Sacramento County by swapping groundwater pumping for a drought-proof supply. The Harvest Water initiative will deliver a massive 50,000 acre-feet of recycled water annually to more than 16,000 acres of working lands, creating a reliable infrastructure that supports both the economy and the environment. This intentional shift in water management, detailed by Sonny Lunde of @sacsewer, aims to raise local water tables significantly while stabilizing the region's most critical natural habitats. "By providing the farmers this water for irrigation use, they no longer have to pump groundwater, thus restoring our groundwater up to level 35 feet over a period of 15 years... it provides benefits for wildlife habitat and will help sustain 5,000 acres of riparian and wetlands habitat." By integrating agricultural needs with ecosystem restoration, Sacramento is demonstrating how recycled water can be a primary catalyst for long-term regional resilience. California is securing water supply with financing — not rainfall. In recent years, state funding has accelerated drinking water, wastewater, and recycling infrastructure across dozens of communities. The result is a growing volume of dependable local water produced through treatment and reuse rather than imported from shrinking sources. “$1.7 billion over just the last years have been for water recycling. Somewhere around 64 projects create an additional 230,000 acre feet of reliable water a year,” said Joaquin Esquivel of the California State Water Resources Control Board. Water reliability in California is increasingly built project by project. Episode at link in bio, on waterloop.org, and wherever you listen to podcasts. Ryan Fowler, Assistant Project Manager in Bakersfield, is helping lead a project that turns challenge into opportunity. The Cawelo Water Reuse of Produced Water Project takes water generated from local oil production and repurposes it for agricultural irrigation, protecting freshwater supplies and supporting our region’s growers. This is what building environmental projects for a sustainable future looks like in action. #WeAreWML #sustainableinfrastructure #waterreuse

Over the weekend we were honored to host part of the CV Water Counts Academy tour at our Nancy Wright Regional Water Reclamation Facility. The academy is held annually starting in January for 4 weekly sessions, and ends with a facility tour which includes 3 - 4 locations at various agency facility sites. The CV Water Counts group is a nonprofit group that was formed to focus on water conservation, through awareness and education to Coachella Valley residents, businesses, and government. It is comprised of the Coachella Valley’s six water agencies which includes Mission Springs Water District (MSWD), Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD), Coachella Water Authority & Sanitary District, Desert Water Agency (DWA), Indio Water Authority (IWA), and Myoma Dunes Water Company. Discharging treated water into the heart of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta carries a massive responsibility, as this watershed serves as a primary hub for the state’s water delivery network. To protect this vital resource, the Sacramento Area Sewer District operates one of the largest inland discharge points west of the Mississippi under some of the nation’s most rigorous environmental permits. These strict standards ensure that the facility’s output supports both a fragile aquatic ecosystem and the reliable water supply for 27 million Californians, says Christoph Dobson of @sacsewer Episode at link in bio, on waterloop.org, and wherever you listen to podcasts.
