Ferrari’s “Macarena Wing” – Innovation with a Structural Price 🏎️ But there’s one aspect that hasn’t really been discussed much: the structural side of it. Unlike a traditional DRS system, this flap doesn’t just hinge open slightly — it rotates a full 180°. At around 90°, the flap is effectively presenting its maximum projected frontal area to the airflow. In other words, there’s a sharp spike in drag at very high speed. The structure has to survive that transient peak load, and that’s no small ask. And that’s just part of the story. Mid-rotation, the aero behaviour becomes pretty aggressive. You’re likely looking at: • Strong flow separation • Intense vortex shedding • Significant oscillatory aerodynamic loading • A shedding frequency that keeps shifting as the car slows under braking That last point is the tricky one. As the car decelerates, the freestream velocity drops — which means the characteristic vortex shedding frequency changes continuously. So now you’re trying to avoid structural eigenfrequencies across a moving excitation spectrum. That’s a nightmare from a structural dynamics perspective. The obvious fix? Increase stiffness. But higher stiffness usually means more material. More material means more mass. And that mass is sitting high up at the rear of the car. Raising the centre of gravity has real consequences: • Increased lateral load transfer • Potential changes in cornering balance • Reduced transient stability So while you gain on the straights, there’s almost certainly a cost in the corners. Ferrari switching back to a conventional DRS configuration on the final day of testing might be a subtle hint that they’re still weighing that compromise carefully. My take? We’ll probably see a standard rear wing in Melbourne, and the “Macarena Wing” brought out selectively at true low-drag circuits like Baku or Monza — tracks where straight-line performance is king and any handling trade-off is easier to justify.
