Easier to attract than to chase ⚡️ Since passing the CISSP at 24, my inbox got filled with six-figure offers. To make sure I knew all I could as a consultant, I went after more knowledge to strengthen my understanding of cybersecurity. The result was never having to earn less than six figures as a cybersecurity expert 📚 By the time I was 29, I was being referred for Deputy CISO roles. Most cyber professionals aren’t doing all they can to earn certifications that clients are seeking. That’s a huge opportunity for those looking to switch careers and are willing to put in the work. All over instagram I see a lot of influencers sharing how they got lucky or bragging about how they barely have the skills to do their jobs ❌, while encouraging you to be lazy and not learn all you can about a field you’re passionate about Professions that earn six figures usually require aggressive schooling (doctors, lawyers, dentist, etc) but cyber? Just a 2 week bootcamp? You just don’t want it bad enough. I wanted it and I got it. It was easy because most people don’t want it. Are certifications actually worth the effort? I’ve heard a lot of debate if certs are still relevant. Some people swear by them, others say they’re a waste of time. I’ve talked to senior engineers and hiring managers - and here’s what I’ve learned: Whether it’s CCNA, AWS CCP, CISSP, or Network+, these certs do can - Teach you new skills - Help increase your pay - Let you pivot into new roles - Give you more career options - Open doors into new specialties - Make you stand out to your employer - Keep you up to date with changing tech - Keep you current on technology changes - Introduce you to peers through study groups But a certification without hands-on skill is just... paper. The real value is the knowledge gained while studying. The labs. The repetition. So yeah - certs are still 100% relevant. Not because of the letters, but because of the learning.
