FIUntil now in Ontario, physicians who had limitations because of their registration pathway were grouped under the same “restricted” label as physicians with disciplinary findings. These are very different situations, but they were communicated in the same way to the public, employers, and institutions.
That is changing.
Starting January 1, 2026, the CPSO will launch a new Provisional Class of Registration. This new class separates pathway related limitations, such as supervision or scope conditions, from discipline related restrictions. It brings more clarity and transparency to how a physician’s registration status is described.
There is also an important practical change. For the first time, physicians in this category will have a defined pathway to move to an independent license after five years, something that did not exist before.
