Here’s what’s really happening 👇 When you hold ice, your brain receives a sudden, intense sensory signal. If the body panics, the breath becomes shallow, jaw tightens, shoulders lift — and the nervous system shifts into fight or flight. That same stress response during labor increases muscle tension around the pelvis, making contractions feel heavier and more exhausting. But when you slow your breath, soften your jaw, relax your shoulders, something powerful happens. Your brain receives a new message: “I am safe.” This activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the same system that supports cervical opening, uterine efficiency, and pain modulation during labor. In labor, pain doesn’t need to be “fought.” It needs to be breathed through. Anxiety going into a C-section, whether it’s your first or a repeat Feeling anxious before a C-section doesn’t mean you’re weak, ungrateful, or “not ready.” It means your nervous system is trying to protect you. Whether this is your first C-section or you’re going into another one after a traumatic birth, anxiety is incredibly common, and completely understandable. For some, the fear comes from the unknown: surgery, recovery, pain, doing something “wrong.” For others, it comes from memory: your body remembers what happened before, even if your mind knows this time is planned and different. This isn’t a mindset problem. It’s a nervous system response. Bright lights. Medical urgency. Loss of control. Pressure to “stay calm” or “just be grateful.” All of this can make anxiety feel even heavier. And choosing a planned C-section after trauma? That takes so much strength. For many moms, it’s a way of reclaiming safety and control. What actually helps calm anxiety isn’t forcing positivity, it’s: • Knowing what to expect, step by step • Naming fears instead of suppressing them • Having simple grounding tools you can use on the table • Feeling prepared for how you’ll move, care for your body, and hold your baby after surgery Confidence doesn’t come from being fearless. It comes from feeling PREPARED. If your body is holding fear, it doesn’t mean something bad will happen. It means something important already happened, and your body is trying to protect you. A baby estimated at 4.1 kg could actually weigh anywhere between about 3.4 kg and 4.7 kg. That’s a big difference! You are allowed to pause and make an informed choice. Saying no to an induction based only on an estimate doesn’t mean you’re refusing care. Your healthcare team still has a duty to support and monitor you. Ask questions like: 💬 “How accurate is this estimate?” 💬 “What’s the margin of error?” 💬 “Are there other safe options for me and my baby?” Your body made this baby, it knows how to birth them.
