SYPeople love Wicked because it lets them admire rebellion without ever having to encounter it in real life.
Elphaba is a safe proxy BECAUSE she is symbolic and green instead of human.
Audiences can cheer for her resistance precisely because it doesn’t require them to examine their own morals…or lack thereof.
The movie has taught people nothing, in reality.
We still punish real women—especially women of color—for the same traits people applaud in Elphaba.
We still reward Glinda’s pleasantness over actual integrity.
And we still treat truth-telling as a liability.
Wicked is a story about a woman punished for doing what is right no matter what, but many of its admirers continue to enforce the exact dynamics the film highlights.
If you want to know who the real villains are, don’t look at Oz. Look at how society treats the real truth-tellers and the most vulnerable.
Have the viewers been changed for good? I don’t think so.
