On August 11, 1972, 28 hours after completion of the Valley Curtain, extreme weather made it necessary to start the removal. In an interview with the Smithsonian following the project, Christo said: "On our planet, nothing stays forever, everything is temporary, it is only a matter of a shorter or longer time. All my projects have this tremendous amount of very specific, fragile elements. The temporary quality must be translated, by the fragility, and this causes a feeling of urgency. In the summer of 2016, Lake Iseo in northern Italy was transformed by Christo & Jeanne-Claude into a surreal golden passage that allowed more than a million visitors to experience the sensation of walking on water. Conceived in 1970 and realized more than four decades later, The Floating Piers became one of the most iconic large-scale installations of contemporary art. The floating walkways extended for 3 kilometers across the lake, connecting the town of Sulzano with Monte Isola and the small island of San Paolo. Built from 220,000 interlocking cubes and covered with 70,000 m² of saffron-yellow fabric, the pathways shimmered and changed hues with the light and the waves, turning the landscape into a living artwork. Christo described the experience as “walking on the back of a whale,” where every step created a tactile dialogue between body, fabric, and water. True to the artists’ vision of democratic art, the work was completely free and open 24 hours a day, funded solely by the sale of Christo’s original artworks, without sponsors or public money. Ephemeral by nature, The Floating Piers existed for only 16 days before being dismantled and fully recycled, leaving no physical trace behind. Conceived in 1970 and realized more than four decades later, The Floating Piers stands as one of contemporary art’s most iconic ephemeral interventions. The installation stretched 3 kilometers across the lake, linking Sulzano to Monte Isola and the tiny island of San Paolo. To mark the twentieth anniversary, visitors to Central Park are able to view a section of “The Gates” where it was originally installed via an augmented-reality experience powered by the free Bloomberg Connects (@bloombergconnects) app through tomorrow, April 16.
