When I started teaching 22 years ago, classroom management meant routines, clear expectations, and consistent consequences. Now? It looks like de-escalating trauma, calming panic attacks, supporting anxiety. It means being counselor, social worker, and crisis team. And that could be before 11 AM. That’s not misbehavior. That’s emotional overload. And here’s what no one talks about: Your body absorbs that. When you manage multiple nervous systems a day, your own nervous system stays on high alert. That wired-but-exhausted feeling at 2 PM? The crash when you finally sit down? The second wind at 9 PM when you should be asleep? That’s not weakness. That’s overload. For a long time, I thought I just needed to be tougher. Now I know I needed to support my body differently. If you’re a teacher who feels like the job quietly shifted under your feet… you’re not imagining it. Follow along if you want real conversations about what teaching actually feels like now — and how to stay in it without burning out. #Teacherlife #teacherover40 #teacherenergy #teacherburnout #midlifemama

I used to think if I just repeated my directions my students would eventually get it. Guess what… They didn’t. And what usually happened was behaviors would ramp up and I would feel frustrated. Fast forward to when I figured out how powerful visuals were and everything changed. ✨ I found myself repeating less, modeling more, and students understood faster. Hi, I’m Diana 👋 and around here we believe that visuals change lives (or at least your sanity 😉) After years of feeling frustrated and not understanding why my energy was zapped, I uncovered the secret to helping students understand how to be a learner so they were available to learn the information. It’s all about showing expectations, practicing often, and celebrating success. Make sure to 📌 save and follow along! Your classroom management will thank you. 🫶 #kindergartenteacher #classroommanagement #classroommanagementstrategies

Yeah I sit on desks and throw a little shade. 🤪 But when it’s time to work… we lock in. I feel like there is no classroom management the day before a break. I’m the teacher who jokes with you… then reminds you the deadline didn’t move. Why don’t teachers always confront minor disruptive behaviour in front of the whole class? Why do we wait? Sometimes we clearly see a student playing up or trying to draw attention, like calling out loudly and repeatedly, “Can I go pee?” with a big grin on their face. Now, do they genuinely need to go? Maybe. But is that the appropriate way to ask? That’s the real teaching moment. In a whole-class setting, publicly confronting minor behaviour can unintentionally give the student exactly what they’re seeking — attention. Instead, we are intentional. We: • Teach expectations explicitly • Reinforce positive behaviours • Redirect calmly when needed • And then give the student ownership to make a better choice next time. Our goal isn’t to “win” in the moment — it’s to build self-regulation, responsibility, and respectful habits over time. Sometimes the most powerful classroom management move… is the quiet one. Parenting is the same, choose the right time to confront / redirect and do it strategically. During my beginning years of teaching, I required a silent and focused classroom upon the students walking in until one day I asked myself why this was the standard I set for my students.

Sadlly, the best answers I could come up with was the fear that the administration would walk in at any point because college taught me that anything other than silence and productivity revealed that you did not have classroom management or a sense of good use of time in student learning. And the second reason was because I needed it to be silent.

And those were not a good enough reasons, so I decided to change what my room looked and felt like upon my students arriving.

So let’s chat about what I see less and more of with this switch to soft starts.
For the students: ✨ Less anxiousness coming into school ✨Less behavioral issues in the morning ✨Less rebellious behavior from students ✨Less hesitation coming into the room ✨Less tardies from students because of their dread coming in For me: ⭐️Less to grade/review ⭐️Less to print and prepare ahead of time For the students: ✨More engagement during actual lessons because I did not tap into their focus bank immediately upon arrival ✨More socialization from students ✨More calmness coming into the room ✨More unity amongst my students ✨More learning through play and creativity ✨More energy from me because of not having to redirect their focus to finish morning work
For me: ⭐️More time to connect with the kids ⭐️More moments to get to know them and their interests / strengths which allowed me to connect this to our lessons As an adult, when is the last time you walked into a room full of silence and a need for immediate focus at 8:00 am and enjoyed it?

So why do we keep expecting this from our kids? #teaching #softstart #learningthroughplaying #2ndgrade #primaryteacher

It’s always nerve-wracking when students are talking over you. But one of the things I never wanted to do was yell over my students. When I was a first-year teacher, I had a teacher’s assistant who was always yelling over our students. The results? My students and class would just get louder. Here are 3 strategies I like to use instead of yelling to get my students’ attention when they are talking over me. 1️⃣Wait One of the things I love to do when a student starts talking over me is I will stop mid-sentence when they start talking over me. The sudden stop mid-sentence or pause makes it super uncomfortable for the rest of the class, and the student will inevitably pause as well. 2️⃣Whisper Whenever the class is getting loud in the middle of the lesson, I like to lower my voice to a whisper. This subconsciously gets the rest of the class quiet because they want to hear what you are saying. 3️⃣Shout Out 3 When neither of the above methods works, I like to shout out 3 students who are following expectations and what they are specifically doing that I appreciate. “I love how Student A has a bubble in their mouth showing me they are listening to me.” Honestly, this is one of the most defeating feelings as a new teacher. If you’re tired of constantly fighting for attention, my Classroom Management Bundle walks you through exactly how to get your class quiet, respectful, and ready to listen — without raising your voice or repeating yourself a million times. Comment ‘Challenge’ and I’ll send you the link. Not ready to dive into the full system yet? Comment ‘Master’ for my free guide. And follow me so you don’t miss part 23 tomorrow. Tomorrow, I’ll show you what to do when a student is constantly blurting out. #firstyearteacher #newteacher #studentteacher #classroommanagement #classroommanagementtips
