Cleft and Craniofacial awareness month is drawing to an end and it’s hard to believe that almost 4 years ago we received C’s bilateral cleft lip and palate diagnosis at our 20 week anatomy scan. I remember leaving with so many unknowns, what ifs, and unsure what the future would hold. While it’s never easy to hear there’s something different about your child, and any diagnosis can be scary and filled with many emotions, I am extremely thankful we have an amazing team of doctors and a situation that is correctable. It’s been amazing to see God’s hand upon his life and his sweet gummy smile has captured my heart from the beginning. Just hours before she had half an inch gap between her lips and no right nostril, now, a small area of stitches that will soon be barely noticeable. . I cried the second I saw her after surgery. However, I didn’t cry for the reasons I thought I would. I thought I would cry because she looks completely different, like a whole new baby. I’ve heard moms say they weren’t even sure if it was their baby. Actually, I had a sigh of relief that she looked like my baby, she looked just like I remembered, but… “better:” I cried because all I saw was her itty bitty body laying on that bed helpless, lonely, and unaware. I cried because this part of her diagnosis makes me very angry. It’s not fair to her. I still struggle with asking, “why her? Why my baby?” . As a parent, we want nothing more than to take away anything that causes pain to our babies. This isn’t something I can take away. It’s not something she has a say so in. It’s not the last time she’ll be on a bed like this. It’s just part of the roller coaster of emotions that comes with any diagnosis—denial, anger, acceptance, etc. . We are so, so grateful for our doctor at @cookchildrens and their cleft team! They did a phenomenal job taking care of her and us. @collette_cutiewithacleft does look like a whole new baby, but she still looks like my baby! I know each surgery will come with its own package of emotions, but wow, number one is done! That flew by! . They say every smile has a story, and this is Lotty’s. 🍼Let’s talk newborn cleft feeding! It’s something I worried about and prayed about for so long! Every child journey is unique, but here is a little bit of ours! A few pro tips if you are a newly diagnosed cleft parent or grandparent wondering about how to feed your baby. 🍼Get connected with your cleft team as soon as possible, they were able to send us the 3 speciality bottles ahead of time so we could practice using them. 🍼we transferred after our diagnosis to a hospital that our cleft team worked out of so they could come and visit us in the hospital and help with the bottles if we needed help. 🍼most cleft (palate) affected babies won’t be able to breastfeed because they can’t create suction. It’s like trying to suck on a straw with a hole. 🍼Brianna was fed donor milk in the hospital while I was pumping to establish my supply. I also hand expressed colostrum for her! 🍼watch YouTube videos to learn how to use the bottles in case the staff at your hospital doesn’t know. 🍼join the cleft mom support group on Facebook. There are 16,000 very active mamas on there and many of them will pass bottles that they never used or the very special blue discs that go into the @drbrowns bottles! They convert the regular dr. Browns bottles to turn them into cleft bottles! That’s what we used. 🍼 follow the advice of the cleft team! We had numerous doctors looking over our mri and said that we would need a feeding tube and would have a lengthy nicu stay. But after talking to our cleft team they reassured us that wasn’t an automatic, and we ended up going home 2 days after birth without a feeding tube and she LOVED the first bottle she tried. 🍼if you end up with a feeding tube or a nicu stay, please remember that the doctors and nurses are setting you and your baby up for a lifelong of success. And just to take each day one day at a time! It’s a marathon, not a sprint! 🏃‍♀️ You have a lot of people cheering you on! 🎉 What questions do you have about cleft feeding?!
