I have always eaten before my runs and honestly can’t function if I don’t eat immediately before my workouts; but recently I have been making those snacks (or I guess meals at this point) even bigger (& yes still at 4am.) I went from a couple of pieces of toast or a clif bar; to a minimum of 4 pieces of toast, or 2 pieces of toast and an energy bar (yes effectively doubling it) - adding between 250 and 300 calories. And guess what I didn’t gain weight. A lot of you message me about your concerns over eating more leading to gaining weight, and whilst yes for some people - gaining weight is necessary (go watch my recent youtube - I gained over 30lbs and got fasters) - eating more doesn’t have to equal gaining weight. And here’s why: * When you underfuel - your body downregulates non essential functions so you can effectively run off less fuel and not change weight. When you eat more, the energy goes to restoring those functions so you don’t actually gain weight (but become a healthier human). * When you fuel properly before a training session, you can perform at a much higher level - thus possibly expending more energy and actually using up those extra carbs you fueled with. Yes, training is never about burning calories - but the gains you get - both muscle mass but also endurance wise from being able to train with a full battery are insane. * When you eat enough early in the day - you don’t binge in the evening. This is something I see a lot (& used to struggle with) - you save calories for later in the day and end up overeating because you are so hungry. Your body needs those calories when you are using them most (training, early in day for normal activities) - so when you give it enough energy then, you won’t end up still binging later and you might actually eat the same overall calories but the distribution is a lot more optimal. So my challenge for this week is to add a couple of hundred calories to your pre training snack; then come back to this post and comment how you felt - to inspire others that more calories isn’t a bad thing.

Every day she would run on the treadmill, singing the entire set list out loud. Fast for fast songs, and a jog or a fast walk for slow songs. Tthe estimated workout time: 3.5 hours... which she did DAILY... for SIX MONTHS. Zoe Rom (@carrot_flowers_z), editor-in-chief of @trailrunnermag, is no amateur when it comes to ultrarunning, having won a few of them herself in the 50 and 100 miler distances. She had this to say about her experience with Taylor’s workout: “Thirty-two minutes in, the downbeat Evermore set begins. A folksy 23-minute respite. I took a gel and a swig of water. When did Taylor have time to fuel during the Eras Tour? Was there a bottle of Maurten just out of view or a Clif Bar tucked into a brazier? What was her electrolyte strategy? You can’t do this show in Nashville or Brazil without a dialed-in electrolyte plan. Taylor, if you’re reading this, we recommend between 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrate per hour for this level of activity. This is the hardest workout I’ve ever done. I was wrecked. My trachea felt like I had swallowed Taylor’s bejeweled duster. Holy smokes. Want to know what finals week looks like in Harvard Grad School? This video x 8 straight days. I have to say this semester through the Harvard Business School pushed me to my absolute limits. My peers were executives at Exxon and Disney, with decades of experience in the corporate world. Me? My background is in the creative industries. As a commercial photographer and creative consultant, the scope of my work ranges from campaign ideation and creative direction to photography and digital storytelling. My clients are brands with deep commitments to sustainability, ranging from Clif Bar to Patagonia. I have never worked in the corporate world, and frankly, it intimidates the heck out of me. However, since the pandemic's start, I have leaned into the challenge of pivoting my career towards sustainability consulting and earning my master’s degree. Taking this course through the Harvard Business School was a HIGH priority.   Every topic in this class was new to me, including things such as ‘proxy statements’ and ‘KPI.’ Creating this final paper has helped me gain some fluency in reading corporate disclosures and, above all, has taught me to be skeptical. I now understand the importance of reading a company’s 10-K to see beyond its superficial statements and to my due diligence before I decide to do business with a company. Above all, I am proud of myself. For going WAYYY outside my comfort zone and realizing that it’s possible (and important) to combine the business world with creativity. Although I share parts of my life on the internet and I’m in an extroverted profession, I’m still a relatively shy person. ☁️ One thing I get hesitant about sharing is my health. I’ve always been too intimidated or shy to go to the gym and have just stuck to at-home workouts. Actually getting OUT of the house to be fit is...a struggle, especially with having body image issues. But, I want to change that. I want to try new things, get moving, and be happy in my home (my body). 🧗🏻‍♀️ Trying new things can be nerve-wracking, but I hope that me inching my way out of my own comfort zone can inspire you to get out of yours. Do something that takes some guts. Everyone’s comfort zone looks so different and you don’t need to jump off a cliff to make progress. Every step outside counts to growth. This is your reminder that before you drop calories, you gotta make sure you're choosing the right foods!💪🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In all seriousness, sometimes you may need a calorie adjustment/drop🙋🏼‍♀️ or dial in your accuracy tracking to actually hit your deficit✔️ But what I see time and time again after coaching thousands of women in my career as a Registered Dietitian is wanting to drop your calories before addressing how you can improve WHAT you're eating‼️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes calories drive weight loss🔥 but what you eat impacts how those calories are absorbed💁🏼‍♀️ And truth is you actually can't hit your calories for weight loss without eating the right portions of carbs, proteins and color/fiber (through fruits and veggies)😎 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So before you just drop calories or cut out an entire meal, take inventory on the types of foods you're eating! All the foods here can fit a weight loss plan but to save calories and healthify this day of eats, here's what I'd do🌈 - Breakfast = add protein to breakfast and make a TSN Starbucks Swap by getting a iced coffee instead of iced latte with the syrups - Snack = have fruit instead of a clif bar to save calories - Lunch = swap chips for carrots and make sure to add color to the sub (or do a wrap to save calories) - Dinner = swap for unsweet tea and put the tenders on a a salad and get a small fry ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you are trying to be "good" on a diet but you honestly feel like you have no idea what you're doing😅 this is exactly why I created The Sorority Nutritionist! Basically, how to apply all that sports nutrition knowledge in the real every day world! I used to see food as the ‘reward’ that I earned after finishing my training session, and just stick to the bare minimum required before + during training to keep my blood sugar levels stable… But switching that focus to really OPTIMISING my fuel availability around training has been such a game changer to my energy levels and how much effort I can put into my training sessions!🚀 Here’s an example of how I fuelled a morning CrossFit training session this week: ✅PRE-TRAINING: Weetbix porridge made with 3 weetbix, a banana, almond milk, protein powder and peanut butter before. Plus a coffee. We want at least 1g carbs per of bodyweight!! ✅THROUGHOUT: I drank carb powder and electrolytes, and a Clif bar. I also had some dried mango, to get me to around 40g carbs per hour of training which works well for me. Big shoutout to @aidstn where I find all my favourite intra-training fuel in the one place!
