A cup of coffee won’t keep you out of heaven, but it can keep you out of the temple. If you let it. But WHY? Honestly… does it matter? Choosing to obey, even when we don’t understand, brings spiritual power and covenant protection. We live in a world that values “doing what feels right to you.” But in God’s kingdom, we often grow most by doing what doesn’t fully make sense to us…yet; overcoming the natural man. That’s the nature of obedience. That’s the test. The truth is, obedience is rarely about the thing itself—it’s about who we trust and what we become. And I’d rather be transformed by obedience than by a cup of coffee.

Helaman, a prophet in the Book of Mormon, taught his sons the gospel of Jesus Christ. Following these teachings, his sons, Nephi and Lehi, continued to preach the word of God to all the people of Nephi.    Yet the Lamanites had already been raised to follow the wickedness of their forefathers. When Nephi and Lehi tried to preach the gospel to them, they were taken captive and thrown into prison. They were starved and called to be slain, yet they did not forget their faith.    Nephi and Lehi remembered the teachings of their father. When they placed their faith in the foundation of Jesus Christ—“a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall” (Helaman 5:12)—they found peace and safety in Jesus Christ, and they were not harmed.    When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we can find safety and refuge in Him throughout all of life’s challenges.    How have you found safety from life’s storms in Jesus Christ?    #TheBookOfMormon #FeastUponTheWord #ComeFollowMe #VerseOfTheDay

Have you heard of how to trap a monkey? You put something they want, like a banana, in a box. Then, you make a hole in a box just big enough for their hand to get through but not big enough for their hand to get through if it is balled up in a fist. Supposedly, they will stay there, trapped, even though they could get themselves free at any time just by letting go of the item in the box. I thought of that analogy as I pondered on lightmindedness in the temple yesterday. D&C 84:54 states that we should not “treat lightly sacred things.” And I realized that one of the most sacred things that I have is agency and this opportunity to come to earth to learn, grow, and become closer to God. How often am I treating that sacred opportunity lightly? The world and our natural man want us to focus on the light, fluffy, amusing, empty things around us. Joseph Smith gave a personal example of this when he stated, “I frequently […] displayed the weakness of youth, and the foibles of human nature; […] I was guilty of levity, and sometimes associated with jovial company, etc., not consistent with that character which ought to be maintained by one who was called of God as I had been.” It is so easy to fall—or scroll—into the trap of lightmindedness. And then stay there. Stuck. . Because we can never have enough of something that doesn’t truly satisfy. As Elder Bradford said, “Clear out the clutter. Take your life back. Use your willpower. Learn to say no to those things that will rob you of your precious time and infringe upon your agency to choose […] the plan of happiness and exaltation.” As we are intentional in prioritizing our covenants and boss that natural man of ours, we will find true joy.
