Day 1 of 30! This is a very personal campaign that will bring you into our lives. We are nonspeakers who use boards and touch letters to communicate from across the country and we're working tirelessly to change the understanding of autism. Apraxia is why most nonspeakers with autism cannot speak. It's a motor coordination disability not a cognitive one. And even though there are tens of thousands of nonspeakers who use spelling methods as their primary mode of communication, professional disability organizations say it's not evidence based and not independent and should not be used. This next month we will share the stories of those spellers and their families and professionals who are openly communicating and can tell their own stories! Please like, share, comment and follow @spellersfreedom and @communication4allorg and flood the internet with the truth Communication is a Human Right! Visit www.spellersfreedomfoundation.org and www.communication4all.org — and WATCH THE HIGHWIRE TOMORROW (www.thehighwire.com) Let's go. #CommunicationIsAHumanRight #MyVoiceMyChoice #AutismAction #Communication4All #SpellersFreedom

“Why can’t he just type on keyboard?” I get asked this question a lot. And it all goes back to apraxia. This video is sped up to 1.7x speed bc it took Chase 2:17 minutes to type out EXCITED TO PRACTICE. It’s not that he didn’t know what he wanted to say. Or that he didn’t know how to spell it. But because of apraxia, to make his body cooperate, and learn a new motor plan to type, it takes a LOT of patience and time, and prompting from me to keep eyes looking/scanning and his body going. It’s hard work, and tedious, especially in the beginning. And that’s why communication partners are crucial for our spellers (and typers) - because of apraxia!😒 But LC is DETERMINED! 💪🏼 He has goals and dreams…and typing is his newest one! And I’m here to make that happen! So stay tuned!🙌🏼 #CommunicationIsAHumanRight #MyVoiceMyChoice #Communication4All #SpellersFreedom #AutismAction

One of the biggest misconceptions we find when working with folks who are just learning about text-based communication is that all it should take for a student to be able to communicate is providing the right piece of technology (why can’t she just use the talking keyboard?) or just placing a board in front of them (why won’t he spell when I put the board in front of him?) These questions inform how we provide training and support to schools. But that school has to be invested in the training. Sometimes, they say some version of “Sure, you can have a letterboard / keyboard. Just pick it up and use it.” That statement tells us we have more work to do educating about why a student can’t necessarily just pick up a board or type on a laptop. They need * training that includes a foundation in presuming competence and using strengths-based language. * to understand apraxia & the brain-body disconnect. * to understand the importance of building a balanced relationship between student & support staff. * to learn how & when to prompt a student’s movement, eyes, posture, attention - and when to fade those prompts. * to learn how to adapt academic assignments to make them accessible in different ways without losing their grade-level integrity. It’s SO much more than just holding up a board. As our student TJ writes, “I’m pleading for my right to communicate with someone trained to support me. Would you give a Deaf student interpreters who don’t really know ASL? Just like knowing how to finger spell doesn’t mean you can sign, holding a board up doesn’t mean you can support my communication.” For this sort of comprehensive training, we recommend Communication for Education. We are partners and have worked with around 300 educators, direct support providers, parents, administrators, and related service professionals. #spellers #presumecompetene #nonspeakingautism #communicationisahumanright #communicationaccess @communicationforeducation

Love this video of Houston! Like all spellers, mastering motor control is a journey — but the intelligence and intention are there from the very start. When you witness spellers clearly communicating — whether through a stencil board, laminated board, AAC device, or iPad — it demands more than a reflexive, materialist dismissal. It demands critical thinking, open-hearted reasoning, and the courage to rethink old assumptions. The truth is right in front of us. We just have to be willing to see it. Dismissing spelling is way easier & convenient than reshaping our institutions, spearheading inclusion or grappling with telepathy. #TelepathyTapes #CommunicationIsAHumanRight #PresumeCompetence #OpenYourMind

🌎 On World Autism Day, let’s move beyond awareness to action, affirming: Communication is a Human Right. This Autism Acceptance Month, we are reflecting on more than 40 years of autism support by recognizing something fundamental: every individual has the right to communicate, be heard, and be understood. ❤️ The Communication Bill of Rights reminds us that communication is not just a skill to be taught — it is a basic human right that must be respected and supported in all environments. Every person has the right to: • Interact socially and build relationships • Request what they need and want • Refuse or reject what they do not want • Express preferences and feelings • Make meaningful choices Supporting communication means supporting autonomy, dignity, and connection. ✨ #AutismAcceptance #AutismSupport #CommunicationIsAHumanRight #WorldAutismDay #PECSglobal

The most dangerous mindset in a parent is… The idea that intelligence is fixed. My son has Down Syndrome, he is Autistic AND non-speaking, well, and a published poet. And I had that exact mindset, and in my free workshop I am going to tell you exactly what to do to build your child’s learning and intelligence. Do you hear yourself saying things wistfully like: Gopal’s son is so smart. He is a science whiz! I am so in awe of Elizabeth’s daughter. Can you see the medals she has? You are probably believing in a fixed intelligence approach. The truth is that your kid is ALSO smart, whether or not they have medals. But yes, I know you don’t want to just hear vague re-assurances. “How do I know he is smart?” You ask. “How do I help her learn more complex stuff?” There is a technique. I am going to give you that EXACT technique in my workshop. Just make sure you sign up :) #nonlineareducation #autismlearning #communicationisahumanright #severeautism #nonspeakingautism #downsyndrome #dsasd
