Soul Friends, 🌿✨🪬🥹 “I hate it when people say trauma made you strong.” No. Trauma didn’t make me strong. Trauma gave me nightmares. Flashbacks. A body that lives on high alert. Depression. Anxiety. Trust issues. Relationships where I kept trying to make unsafe people feel safe. That isn’t strength. That’s survival. And if you live with complex PTSD, the intensity of your emotions is not a character flaw. It’s a nervous system that learned too early that the world wasn’t safe. There is no “toughen up.” There is no “pull yourself up by the bootstraps.” There is no “snap out of it.” Healing doesn’t happen through pressure. It happens through safety. Through gentleness. Through learning how to come back into your body instead of fighting it. If your system feels overwhelmed, flooded, or spun out right now, I created something gentle for that exact moment. Holy Sh*t. I’m Triggered. What Do I Do? A calming, trauma-informed reset to help your nervous system settle when everything feels like too much. It’s in my Stan store—link in bio. Soul Friend, 🌿✨🪬 If you live with complex PTSD, your brain didn’t fail you. It adapted—early, intelligently, and with love for your survival. Let me explain this gently. Deep inside the brain is the amygdala. 🧠 Think of it as your smoke alarm.🚨 Its job is to notice danger and react fast. When a child grows up in an environment that feels emotionally unsafe— not always because of abuse, but because safety was unpredictable— that smoke alarm learns to stay extra sensitive. Then there’s the hippocampus. 🧠 This is the part of the brain that helps store memories and understand time. When stress is constant, the hippocampus can struggle to sort past from present. That’s why old feelings can rush in and feel current, even when you know you’re an adult now. And at the front of the brain is the prefrontal cortex.🧠 This is the part that helps with thinking things through, calming yourself, making decisions, and staying present. It’s also responsible for executive functioning—things like focus, planning, and emotional regulation. When the brain is stuck in survival, this part goes offline. Not because you’re broken—but because your body is prioritizing protection over logic. This is how people with complex PTSD end up living in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. The brain learned early that staying alert was safer than relaxing.🧠 None of this means you’re damaged.🥺 It means your nervous system learned what it had to learn. And here’s the hopeful part: the brain is changeable.🧠 With safety, understanding, and compassion, these systems can soften and rewire. If this helped something make sense—not just in your head, but in your body— follow me @soulsurgerywithandrea for insight, personal stories, and a safe space for healing. And if you want help understanding whether what you’re experiencing is Complex PTSD, you can book a CPTSD Clarity Call™ in my Stan store—along with other gentle ways to support your nervous system. Everything is at the link in my bio. With love and light and radical healing, ❤️‍🩹 Andrea 🌿✨🪬🥹🤗🤍 #complexptsd #brainandtrauma #nervoussystemhealing #traumaeducation #healingwithcompassion

Do you ever feel disconnected… like you’re moving through life but not fully plugged into relationships, work, or even yourself? That haunting sense of disconnection is one of the most overlooked symptoms of childhood trauma. In this week’s episode, I sit down with Anna Runkle, aka the Crappy Childhood Fairy, who has helped over a million people recognize and heal the lingering effects of trauma. We dive into: ➡️Complex PTSD vs PTSD ➡️How neglect reshapes the brain and emotional regulation ➡️Why dysregulation is the “core” symptom of PTSD ➡️Why trauma survivors often struggle even more during menopause ➡️Anna’s simple daily practice to re-regulate your nervous system and reconnect This is one of those must-listen conversations that shines a light on what so many silently carry. The hardest part about complex PTSD isn’t just the pain, it’s the way it feels endless. You keep telling yourself “it will get better”, but after years of surviving, it starts to feel like a lie. There’s no timeline to look back on, no anchor of “before,” and even the good memories hurt because you crave that feeling so badly it breaks you. CPTSD isn’t one event. It’s a life shaped by relentless wounds. It leaves people in chronic pain-people who become some of the most empathetic, kind souls you’ll ever meet, even as they’re burning inside. If this is you, know you are not alone and healing is possible Comment “link” to work 1:1 and heal Follow for more ❤️‍🩹 #complexptsd #cptsd #complextrauma #traumatized #traumarecovery

Can we be real for a sec? No amount of self-care, deep breaths, or positive thinking could take away the stress of constantly worrying about money. 🥲 Living paycheck to paycheck, not knowing if I could cover rent, bills piling up EVEN WHEN I MADE GOOD MONEY —it wasn’t just about the numbers. It was physically and mentally exhausting. Stress like that messes with your whole body, your sleep, your relationships, and your happiness. I have complex PTSD and have struggled with anxiety and depression my entire life. Honestly, having more money didn’t magically “fix” those things, but it did make life a lot less overwhelming. With money, I had the freedom to actually focus on my healing instead of just surviving. 💸💆‍♀️ Money can buy peace of mind, safety, and security. It can buy freedom. And when you’re not constantly worrying about how to make ends meet, you can actually breathe. I want that for you too. That’s why I’m so excited to share my new free 90-minute webinar: From Broke to Ballin. In it, I break down the exact 5-step system I used to go from $40,000 in debt to becoming a millionaire by 30. 🙌 It’s completely free, and you can grab your spot on my website under ‘freebies’. Trust me, it’s time to take control of your financial future and finally feel like you’re in charge. 💥 Let’s get that financial freedom, babe. You deserve it.

I think everyone has heard of “The Body Keeps the Score” at this point. Here are some fresh books that your trauma therapist has probably read, or at least has on their bookshelf. And you can read them too!… • When There Are No Words: Repairing Early Trauma and Neglect from the Attachment Period — Sandra L. Paulsen A more academic book for EMDR therapists for the stuff that happened before you had language for it—this one helps make sense of those deep, hard-to-explain patterns and how to address healthfully in therapy. • Coping with Trauma-Related Dissociation: Skills Training for Patients and Therapists — Suzette Boon, Kathy Steele, Onno van der Hart Super practical, especially if you tend to check out, go numb, or feel like you have “parts” of you pulling in different directions. One a client could easily read and find useful. • Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving — Pete Walker Honestly one of the most validating books out there for childhood trauma—puts words to things a lot of people have felt but couldn’t explain. • Being a Brain-Wise Therapist: A Practical Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology — Bonnie Badenoch A little more therapist-y, but if you like understanding the why behind your patterns, this one connects the dots in a really human way. Badenoch is fantastic for helping you understand how your brain relates to your overall mental health and wellbeing. • The Heart of Trauma: Healing the Embodied Brain in the Context of Relationships — Bonnie Badenoch Badenoch is on here two times for a reason. This one is all about how healing actually happens in safe, attuned relationships (not just “thinking your way out of it”). • What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing — Bruce D. Perry & Oprah Winfrey An easy entry point that helps you shift from “what’s wrong with me?” to “what makes sense about me?” The reframe we all need! Any good trauma informed books not here? Lemme know ⬇️ ✨Follow @therapywithlizzi for more relatable high functioning anxiety and trauma recovery content 🫶Therapy services offered in IL 🚫This page is for educational purposes and not a replacement for professional therapy

When someone consistently assumes the worst about your intentions, it can become a form of emotional abuse. Over time, that kind of dynamic can wear down your self trust and distort how you see yourself, especially when you’re repeatedly put in a position of having to defend who you are. Long term exposure to that kind of pattern can have real psychological impact, and for some people it contributes to symptoms associated with complex PTSD, especially when it happens in close or ongoing relationships. I feel very strongly about this. I’ve seen way too many communities, especially spiritual communities, that neglect the painful side of life, and/or don’t know strategies to work with it beyond oppressing the pain with pseudo-positivity. Any real path toward integration, embodiment, and wholeness will involve coming up against the darker, more painful side of being human. It’s 100% inevitable. If a person hasn’t experienced it yet, they either haven’t spent enough time on the path, or they are skillfully dancing around their demons (very common and easy to do in meditation). This doesn’t mean that you must endlessly focus on your pain. That would be even worse. There is tremendous healing that comes from learning to orient toward the good and positive in your life. It just can’t be the only strategy. Four books that hold an integrated approach: 1.) My book, Stop Missing Your Life (link in bio) 2.) Learned Hopefulness, by @drdantomasulo 3.) Transcend, by @scottbarrykaufman 4.) A Fierce Heart, by @springwasham Six books that help you explore and integrate pain: 1.) Feeding Your Demons, Lama Tsultrim 2.) The Body Keeps the Score, by Bessel van der Kolk 3.) Complex PTSD, Pete Walker 4.) Healing Developmental Trauma, Laurence Heller & Aline LaPierre 5.) Spiritual Bypassing, Robert Augustus Masters 6.) NO ONE IS GOING TO DO THE WORK FOR YOU! When we are going through hard times, we often will look for someone or some thing to SAVE US! The reality is that the longer you wait to be saved, the longer you will stay “stuck.” You have to do the work yourself, even if it seems impossible. The truth is it’s the only option that you have that can lead to improving your life. Take small steps, take it day by day. It all adds up… In today’s podcast with @brittfrank we get into this concept and more. Britt is a licensed psychotherapist and trauma expert. She received her bachelor’s from Duke and her Master’s of Social Work from the University of Kansas. This is her second time on the podcast and today we are going to discuss many of the themes of her work but we are also going to chat about Britt’s incredible story. She struggled for more than two decades with relationships, chemical/behavioral addictions, depression, anxiety, OCD, complex PTSD and more. After finding her way out of that mess (with a lot of help and a brief stint in a religious cult), Britt changed careers, went back to graduate school, and became a therapist. In this episode, she shares her incredible journey and how she completely transformed all aspects of her life. We also chat about why taking micro-steps leads to big changes if you’re trying to become unstuck, how to effectively reduce anxiety when you’re feeling overwhelmed, why external validation cannot save you, how to transform the way you speak to yourself, why trying to heal your past and forgive others keeps you stuck, how to improve the way you set and achieve goals and so much more. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts 🙏🏼
