I don’t wait for the vase to shatter—I begin with the golden fracture straight away. I choose to embrace beauty not despite the break, but because of it. In recreating the Kintsugi vase in paper, I reverse the order. The story doesn’t unfold from perfection to flaw to healing—it begins with the healing. The gold leads the way, and the vase comes after. It grows around the crack, not to hide it, but to hold it. I’m not mending what was. I declare that something broken is already worthy—and no less perfect than something that has never been broken. Quick video showing the slow process of completing one of my ‘Chimera’ vessels, adding the looped top on a marbled-clay base. I’m often asked how long these pieces take to make, and the honest answer is that I’m almost always working on a few at the same time (it just works for my brain) so I’ve never really kept an accurate record. It’s a slow process, to say the least. As a maker it’s really nice to have a process that I can return to each day, even when I’m busy with work that’s not related to my practice - in my case if I can spend even 15 or even 10 minutes in the morning doing a bit of looping, I feel like I’m moving things in the right direction.
