Your puppy HATES their crate? You probably made this mistake… 😫 Most people do this: Day 1: Get puppy Day 1: Put puppy in crate Day 1: Leave and hope for the best Result? Puppy cries for HOURS! 😱 The problem? You didn’t teach them to LOVE the crate first! Here’s the right way: Day 1-3: Feed all meals in the crate (door open!) Day 4-5: Toss treats in the crate randomly throughout the day Day 6-7: Close door for 5 seconds while they eat, then open Day 8-10: Gradually increase door-closed time Day 11+: They now LOVE their crate! The result? Your puppy WANTS to go in their crate because it’s their happy place! 🏠 Want my free crate training guide? Where Should You Put Your Puppy’s Crate? This is one of the most common questions we get when families are preparing to bring their puppy home — and the answer depends less on the house layout and more on your which location will yield the best follow through. There are two general approaches: Some families place the crate in a separate room behind a closed door. This can work well — if you are 110% committed to not responding to whining and sticking firmly to your routine. Puppies are incredibly persuasive, and returning to the crate during crying quickly teaches them that noise works. The other option is keeping the crate near you and making it part of your daily rhythm. We prefer this method. When the crate is nearby and used consistently, puppies accept it much faster. It becomes your right-hand helper — a safe place to “park” your puppy anytime you can’t provide close supervision. Here’s what many people don’t realize: Puppies need 8–9 hours of daytime crate rest in addition to nighttime sleep in order to get proper deep rest. When the crate is part of the daily routine — used consistently and without emotion — puppies settle faster, get better quality naps, potty training progresses more quickly, and destructive chewing decreases. The biggest mistake we see? Too much freedom. Not enough structure. Crate placement isn’t about convenience — it’s about choosing the setup that allows you to provide generous crate time with calm, consistent follow-through. And one very important reminder: It is not realistic to expect zero whining at first. Puppies typically need about four days to recognize a new pattern. If day two feels harder than day one, that does not mean your plan is failing. Routine and consistency are everything. Make your plan. Commit to it. Stick to it. Your follow through is what determines your puppy’s success. 🖤🐾 This is a hot topic and there’s just so much more to say about it. Want more help with crate training? Comment below and let’s talk about it. We’d love to share more tips! #puppytraining #newpuppy #puppiesofinstagram #puppies #dogtrainer

➡️Nighttime crate training feels emotional. You hear a whine and immediately wonder if you’re doing it wrong. 👉A few things about what you’re seeing here: I filmed this during the day, not at night. The puppies are more awake than they would be overnight. These reactions are closer to what you’d see during daytime crate work, but I wanted to show you the proper setup. 👉The crate sits right by your bed. Use a towel or blanket to cover the top some puppies settle better with coverage, others need to see you. That’s trial and error on your part. I use it halfway as you see it. ✅ I play calming music every night, very low, looped through the entire night. This creates association. Music means bedtime, time to relax, time to sleep. 👉At the end you’ll see me open the crate door to let the puppy out. Watch how calm it stays. No big deal, no excitement, no words. You cannot open the door in response to crying or protesting. Just like daytime work even if you only get one to two seconds of calm, that’s when the door opens. 👉If you think your puppy needs to use the bathroom, it stays calm and neutral. No excitement, no play, no treats. Straight out, let them go, straight back in. Don’t set an alarm thinking you’ll take them out before they wake up. That teaches them to get up at that exact time every single night. Wait for them to signal you. 👉Brief protest in a brand new routine is normal. That doesn’t mean distress. My job isn’t to react to every sound - it’s to read the puppy in front of me. Confusion sounds different than panic. Restlessness looks different than urgency. ✅At 8 to 10 weeks, one to two potty trips overnight is normal. Early morning wake-ups around 3 to 5am are often hunger-related as their bodies regulate blood sugar. Puppies are also very active sleepers. Movement alone doesn’t mean they need out. 👉Night training isn’t cry it out. And it’s not immediate rescue either. It’s calm structure. Presence without creating dependency. Security without overstimulation. ➡️The goal is confidence, not silence. ✅Train your puppy starting on day one! empoweredpuppyschool.com #puppytraining #cratetraining #puppysleep #dogtrainingtips #newpuppy

Progress comes in baby steps. Puppies slowly learn alone time is normal and they are not being abandoned 💛 Independence training started the first day she came home. Learning this with a playpen in a bigger space made it easier to build her tolerance away from me, before crate training even started. ⭐️ How to Teach Your Puppy to Be Alone 1️⃣ Set up a playpen area with their crate inside 2️⃣ Pretend to leave. Step in and out of the playpen for a second. Repeat many times! They learn you always come back. 3️⃣ Sit right outside the playpen ✅ Reward calm behavior ❌ No eye contact / No talking / No commands 4️⃣ Slowly add distance. Walk around randomly in the room to desensitize sounds 🐶 Barking can happen and that’s good feedback from your puppy. Give them a chance to calm down. If it escalates, shorten the distance. Make it easier next session! 5️⃣ Add Duration. Do your own thing nearby 🍎 Practice short daily sessions 3 x 15 mins 🛑 Signs to stop the session: • Continuous high-pitched barking • Heavy panting • Drooling from stress ***Disclaimer: I’m not a dog trainer. Just a girl training her dog and sharing what worked for us*** #puppytraining #independence #crateconfidence #separationanxietyprevention #puppytips

Some may not agree with crate training and THAT. IS. OK!✨ 🐾We are not here to change anyone’s mind, we’re just here to share what works in our lives and our home with OUR dogs.🐾 🏡 We started crate training from day one of each dog coming home. We believe it gives them a place to go to decompress when the day gets loud, and a safe space they can relax, turn off, and get a proper sleep. Without a crate, I’m sure kiwi would be up all night pacing. She is a very alert girl and loves to be on guard. So we give her the break her body needs. Gizmo is 13, Kiwi 7 and Kash 5 and all 3 of them RUN excitedly to their respective crates at bed time, and settle in. They have plush comfy beds that are updated as needed for joint protection and all the blankies they could manage. So tell me if you crate in your house! Why or why not? (No wrong answers here) Let’s have a conversation 😊 #cratetraining #doberman #dogmom #dailylife

This is a good place to start when crate training your dog. Start getting them comfortable going in and out of the crate by throwing a treat in and having them go in and out. You can also feed your dog in the crate and give them a chew with the door open. If your dog already knows sit, down, stay and free you can implement this inside the crate as well so they learn to stay in there until they are “ freed “ When you put your pup in the crate with the door closed make sure you don’t leave the first few times, do the dishes, watch a movies, or simply just hangout near the area so they are comfortable being in the crate while you’re home. This will reduce your dog thinking you’re going to leave every time you put them in the crate. #Cratetraining #howtocratetrain #dogtraining #baerscanineacademy #menifeedogs #calmdogs #dogsofig

Luckily he sleeps through the night now, but those first few nights are always a challenge 😅 WHY we crate train: it’s safer (prevents puppies from chewing on blankets, bedding or toys that they could choke on during the night), it speeds up potty training (they don’t like to go to the bathroom where they sleep so it help build bladder control) and it provides a safe space (feels like a den, provides a sense of security to them, especially with 3 other big dogs around). I understand crate training isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but after 3 other dogs, we wouldn’t do it any other way. When he’s potty trained, he’ll sleep on our bed with the rest of the boys ❤️ #dogsofinstagram #dogsofinsta #dogsofig #goldenretriever #goldenpuppy #puppy #dogs #dog

A lot of dogs struggle with doing nothing. They think they always need to be moving, and that also extends to the human holding the leash. We often believe that we need constantly keep our puppies and dog’s stimulated throughout the entirety of the day. Sometimes the best thing you can teach them is how to shut their brain off and relax. We use place and crate training for this, but many dogs never learn the in between. Tethering teaches calm without a command. It teaches them to work through frustration. Your dog will get frustrated at first. That is normal, and the goal is to set them up to deal with the least amount of frustration possible. If you are following our cycle, this fit’s immediately after we do something productive with our dog, and stay close while doing relatively nothing yourself. This puppy, Holden, is 14 weeks old. First time tethered, he barked on and off for 5-10 minutes. He wanted attention. He wanted to move. He had already trained, played, and walked. It was time to chill. Don’t feed into the barking one way or another, allow them the opportunity to figure it out, even when they get stuck on the leash. Learning to regulate stress now helps prevent bigger issues later like separation anxiety and reactivity. If you have any questions, or any thoughts on tethering your dog, let’s talk about it.

Crate training your dog can be a powerful tool to: • Help regulate anxiety and over-arousal • Prevent destructive or unsafe behaviors • Give your dog a predictable, safe place to settle • Create better independence when you’re away • Build calm, structured habits at home AND SO MUCH MORE! A calm dog isn’t created by more freedom — it’s created by structure.
