Another world class UK surf break [#23] We’ve left Cornwall again (Just) venturing up to North Devon. Croyde is part of the World Surfing Reserve that is North Devon. It’s the only World Surfing Reserve in the UK, and one of only 11 worldwide. Other locations include Ericiera in Portugal, Australia’s Gold Coast, El Salvador’s Oreinte Salvaje, Malibu and Santa Cruz in the US. This already tells you this one of the UK’s best waves. Croyde is a punchy beach break, facing West into the Atlantic. It can collect and hold a large amount of swell and works across the tides. Low tide often leads to the most hollow tubes. However, the break can change as the sand banks beneath move around in the swells. It works best with Easterly Winds blowing offshore, hollowing out the waves. However, it is sheltered by large headlands on the North and South which give it some protection from winds. The North and South edges of the bay are reef and can work as point breaks if the swell angle lines up. When Croyde itself is maxing out, the Southern reef in-front of baggy point can hold the bigger swells and becomes a (small) big waves spot! North Devon collects less swell than further South in Cornwall, so it can be flatter over the summer. In smaller condition, it can be a great spot for learning to surf.
